Is there anything you like or are a fan of that is almost cxompletely unknown these days?

As for me, my parents had a C64 game called Below the Root, which I got rather addicted to as a kid There is also an accompanying set of novels, the Green-sky Trilogy, which I've read so many times that many of them are falling apart I know of very few people who have even heard of the books or game. I think the books have been the biggest influence on my political views.

Another series I was heavily into is the Kroz series. The games bragged about their own success as one of the most popular shareware games in the late '80s, and now few people have ever heard of them, although many more know about the similar ZZT. Of course, it would have helped if the game speed wasn't based on the hardware speed Kroz ran too fast for me even on the 80 MHz 486 we got in the mid-'90s.

Edit: It's here because it can apply to a game, movie, board, etc. Not just games.

SHINKANSEEEEEEEEN!!

Really obscure doujin games.

And I mean as obscure as Yume Nikki was before being translated.

Hell, a search for Neftelia brings the thread I made here as the first result.

:x Are we talking real-world obscurity, or internet obscurity?

Because I'm into the Mother series, which as far as the US is concerned, is... more than a little obscure, especially what with the fact that only one game came out here. >>;

Another thing that I eat up is games by Cave -- Guwange bein' a favorite -- because they manage to combine awesome 2-D visuals with what-the-fuck-is-this-shit difficulty. :x

Obscure in Canada and the U.S.? Yes. Japan? Maybe not.
I like to listen to Japanese Trance (particularly from the Exit Tunes label.) I can't really think of anything else to mention. :p

In any case, I'd say the Disgaea series counts as fairly obscure in terms of offline in Western regions. Same with the Ace Attorney series.

To basically all of my friends outside of the internet, Vocaloid. Not so obscure on the internet, sure, but absolutely none of my friends know who the hell Hatsune Miku is until I show them.

Also Penicorns. Don't ask.

Not sure if it counts, but I actually think the Super Mario Bros movie is good. Well, maybe not "good" good, but certainly enjoyable. I still watch it and get a kick out of it.

In terms of music I'm into goth metal and other stuff that people around me think is obscure, but within the genre the groups are actually fairly well known. Groups such as Nightwish, Last Dance, Sirenia, Kamelot, Gothminister, Epica, Bella Morte, and various stuff on the Dancing Ferret label. Outside of Goth metal I'm into Loreena Mckennit, Enigma (at least how they USED to sound), Deep Forest, Ayreon, Sarah Mclachlan, Celldweller, Gregorian, Switchblade Symphony, Yanni, Epic Movie score, and various other stuff that doesn't necessarily fall into one group. I also like a lot of Celtic stuff, or really, anything that has a Celtic feel. I'm also into Cirque Du Soleil, and I'm starting to get an interest in opera, jazz, and classical music.

I also do a lot of things in my spare time that I think most people don't do. For instance, I read and actually enjoy classic literature such as Dante's Divine Comedia which I'm currently reading. A lot of people don't even read anymore, let alone classic lit so I guess this counts. I'm a big Tolkien fan too, but I guess that's not really obscure anymore. I'm also a big fan of both the Teaching Company and Lynda.com, and I try to listen to at least one lecture a day from them.

Oh yeah, and I've always had a big interest in astronomy, particle physics, relativity, and any other type of "sci-fi fuel" science. This is probably fueled by my step-grandfather telling me stories about his job at an electron accelerator. Even some metaphysics is interesting even if it is out there. Basically anything that is out there, thought provoking, and involves either atoms, space, or the possible true nature to our existence, I'm all over it. I'm also really into X-files and Titanic, which were both massively popular at one point, but nobody gives a shit about them anymore.

Does hair count? Not talking about my own, but there's a certain style of hair that I love on guys.

Maybe it's more of a fetish...or obsession.

Hmmm....

What about the Sega Saturn? Heard that not many people like that. I loved that system.

I'm addicted to two SNES games you've probably never heard of (at least not of the two of them)

Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Top Gear
(I not 2 or 3000, Top Gear the FIRST)

Which off-topic, the ZAMN level editor fails to open in Windows 7 and even in XP mode, which supposedly promised that if it worked in XP, it would work in XP mode. D:

Top Gear is one of my favorite SNES games ever (and yes, I've played ZAMN too)

I love Zombies Ate My Neighbors! I searched for that game and got my hands on it a few months ago for the Genesis.

Ah, more things...
Most of the anime I've watched is pretty damn obscure.
.... To be honest, the only thing I've watched in recent years that really would be considered less than "what the fuck is that" would probably be Haruhi.

Also, Vocaloid stuff, the EXIT games (alongside just about anything Taito that isn't Arkanoid or Space Invaders), and Touhou. Team Fortress 2 stuff, also. That one's particularly sad because it's freaking hilariously awesome of a game and the stuff its fandom produces is great too, but

Pretty much everything by Raizing and Cave, especially like..
Oh, I dunno..
Dangun Feveron, Guwange, Armed Police BatRider, Dimahoo..

Oh and even more obscure doujin shit, like Hellsinker and Exception.

To the above: ZAMN is actually pretty damn popular in a cult sort of way, like Mother, it's no longer really obscure.

Well. I guess its kind of obscure in the US now. I'm a huge fan of the TOMY brand Pokemon collectible figures. Specifically the original "Monster Collection" figures. I've been collecting them since I was 10. They came to the US for a short while packaged by Hasbro as "Battle Figures" (how they managed THAT, I don't know. The toys all even still said "TOMY" on the backs...in fact it was just the TOMY toys in a new package)...and you could usually find the original Japanese ones (or the Chinese region packaged ones co-produced by Auldey, otherwise the exact same toy) floating around in game stores and the like for the longest time back in the day. Well, anyways, they for a while retired the original 151 and reissued them as a series of repaints. Feh. Now they don't even make THOSE anymore, there's actually a very limited release of figurines available right now, apparently, which is really annoying. I kinda don't like the direction they went with it...well anyways, I'm on a quest to collect the original 251 Pokemon (as those were the only series they actually put effort in to and completed)...they are incredibly hard to find now, though the Johto figurines are significantly more abundant than the Kanto ones, the originals of which are near impossible to find. I've lately been checking out Yahoo! auctions to try my luck there. I only need about 18 more and I'll have the first 151. I'm missing somewhere around 40 of the Johto region Pokemon. I don't know, never been big on collecting but I really love Pokemon and I just think it'd be awesome to have all of these. I have a big shelf going all along the wall of my room right now displaying my collection...I really think it adds a lot to be able to show them off. Hopefully if I get my own place (as opposed to living with roommates) I'll be able to show them off in my livingroom or something.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I used to be absolutely obsessed with Megazeux, which is an old DOS based game creation system (Which has an SDL port now, though). It was pretty much the only thing I did for years. Literally, all my time at home, I'd have Megazeux open and I'd be messing in the editor. Around 11-13 I started to use qbasic, but I still played with Megazeux a lot. In recent years I don't mess with it much anymore.

My current little less obscure obsession is Blockland (the "retail" version). I pretty much always have a server up, and I'm often messing with it or building something... and little else other than chatting and web browsing. I've recently gotten in to modding it, even though the engine is a bit frustratingly unstable and the language poorly documented unless you want to shell out cash for torque engine. :/ Not to mention Blockland's specific classes and functions are even less documented.

Uh... Haruhi as well, if it counts. Might watch Urusei Yatsura soon. Maybe Sailor Moon too, that really dropped off the map outside Japan.

I've tended to shun newer shoot em ups. Nothing has beaten Gradius in my eye.

Oh wow, I never would have guessed. My brother bought me ZAMN when I was just 4 years old and I loved it so much it became one of my favorite SNES games (along with Top Gear and the platform Mario ones). Just recently I downloaded it to the Virtual Console and I've been playing it a lot with my cousins. But I find it rather easy now, I've beaten it several times from start to finish and I always end up with over 10 health kits and quite a lot of red potions and pandora boxes... The only time it gets difficult is when I play it with my less-dexterous cousins.

I guess Fraxy would be considered rather obscure, wouldn't it? I love creating bosses and fighting against them. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to touch it for quite a while because of this time-consuming semester. I still have boss ideas in my head that I want to create.

For those of you who haven't heard of Fraxy, we have a thread here for it. Latest update was November 15th.

I love really short hair on women. Then again, I'm lesbian

I was into Zelda Classic when it was obscure and generally made fun of at I1 (IIRC), but it's rather popular here.
