I'm betting you're not seeing it as I'm seeing it.

Yes, the text is large, but it's also the lightest variation on Helvetica Neue; which means it's whisper thin.

The font-stack has been set up so if you don't have Helvetica Neue, you just get Helvetica. And if you don't have Helvetica, you get (ugh) Arial, it's cheap knock-off cousin. Unfortunately, neither Helvetica or Arial have a font-weight variation as light as Helvetica Neue.

I'd consider using Gill Sans Std, but I am not sure which variations on that are available in Windows by default these days. It's been a year since I used Windows fonts. I don't like the default weight for Gill Sans Std except as a heading.

Arial is nearly identical to Helvetica in proportions and weight, but with subtle structural and balance differences.

I prefer Helvetica, but it's the original, it's better balanced, and rounded. Compare the roundness of the capital letter G from Helvetica and Arial.

That said, Helvetica is a classic. It's been used in countless things, you won't have to look far for a logo with it. Arial is passable, but I certainly wouldn't use it for any important design work, and I prefer to use Helvetica where I can.

I did some sniffing around, and apparently one has to actually buy Helvetica Neue. What.

As for fonts I prefer... I usually use Tahoma or Trebuchet MS.

I use Calibri and Tahoma in terms of sans fonts, because I found them really easy to read... as for serif fonts, I usually go with Garamond, since I can't stand Times New Roman

I personally like Myriad Pro, but not everyone has it. Gill Sans MT looks nice (fairly sure it comes with Office these days, if not with Windows proper), and Helvetica is nice too, but I don't have anything that installs it right off the bat.
Also, Tarale, your layout text is huge and just... doesn't look too good outside of its original style (e.g. Helvetica Neue Light).

Hm. For Windows, probably. I know it's a default font on Macintosh. D'oh. Haha, well, Mac users get to see the sexy lite font.

Eh, perhaps I'll look in to using Gill Sans, although I'm not sure: again, which variation is it that Windows has? I have Gill Sans Std, Gill Sans MT, and just Gill Sans.

Gill Sans is another classic typeface, but again I prefer its light versions.

Windows (7, at least) has Gill Sans and Gill Sans MT.

MT's a pretty nice font. I'd give that one a shot.

Looks like both Gill Sans Std and Gill Sans have a light variation. Gill Sans MT does not.

Right now, I have "Tahoma, Lucida Grande, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif" as my font stack

Tahoma is best for my layout (I used to have Calibri as the first font, but then I removed that from the stack because it didn't work well with the FF6/CT-style shadow effect)... I also put Lucida Grande for any Mac users out there, as well as Verdana and Arial for people who don't have Tahoma or Lucida Grande... and finally, sans-serif covers other sans-serif fonts, if none of the above is available

Eh. I liked Helvetica.

But Gill Sans is my other go-to font. I even wrote an entire User Guide in it. It's a much more unique font than Helvetica, although I sometimes get hung up on the lowercase letter a in it, because it's the only letter that doesn't seem to balance right.

Gill Sans MT often comes with Microsoft Office. If you don't have Office, you probably don't have it, although I know there are "free" downloads of it available.

I am pretty sure Gill Sans pre-dates your system: it was released in 1928. It is a very British typeface, having been used in the rail system, a lot of Penguin Books paperbacks, the BBC, and more recently the British Government.

The documentary on Helvetica is awesome.

And I'm actually annoyed that neither Helvetica or Gill Sans are in the public domain yet. Both have been around for a long time (Gill Sans since the 1920's, Helvetica since the late 1950's), and both are very useful.

I am a fan of serif fonts. Granted, they are not designed for on-screen display so much, but even so, I find them much easier to read, especially in large blocks of text where someone has neglected to use line breaks. The font faces I set up are Adobe Caslon Pro (a common font used for actual printing in books; if you don't have Photoshop or some part of the Creative Suite you might not have it,) Georgia, and Times New Roman (ugh) as a last resort.

In other news, I think I might actually stick with my current layout for a while now. The border-radius property let me add rounded corners, but they look terrible in a webkit-based browser right now for some reason so they will only show in Firefox (and IE doesn't support it at all.) I wish that CSS3 support would be a bit more consistent and that a final draft could be released sooner rather than later. It's boring having redundant code designed for different rendering engines.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
