Our extremely ghetto-ass mall recently opened a Super Walmart. It's very shiny, glossy, clean, and new. I have this weird internal stigma about Walmart being evil and/or soul-owning, but I get the feeling they're pretty friendly about people wanting jobs.

So, I've been thinking. I really could use a job over this summer, and I was pondering about looking to the Super Walmart. It's close to home, so there's only a small drive, and I'm assuming if I work there, my income will increase to something bigger than $0.00, which is an ultimate bonus no matter which way I look.

The thing is, I'm pretty shy, and if I can, I'd really rather not have a position where I have to talk to customers a lot. If I could do something involving putting shit on the shelves, putting shit in a database, etc, that'd be lovely.

Have any of you worked at a Walmart, and know if they offer these kinds of positions? Moreover, do any of you know if they treat their employees well?

Wait, they opened up a SUPER Walmart right across from GMU in that little shopping center? The one with the tiny movie theater that shows older movies for like $2? Good lord, where did they get the space for that? I know exactly the area you're talking about and I can't see a super walmart fitting in there.

And sorry, I don't have anything to help with for the main question...

No, not there, I'm talking about my actual home neighborhood, Not-Fairfax.

Oh. I guess "ghetto ass-mall" applies to both malls then. The one near GMU is pretty crappy.

Your hyphen placement made me giggle a little. Well done.

Yea... I can't really stand Walmart at all, since I prefer Kmart or Target anyway (for one thing, Kmart and Target aren't evil...)

Anyway, if you so desire, you should go ahead and apply for a job at that Super Walmart anyway... getting a job would really help in this economy, since I don't expect the recession to be truly over until next year...

You're not the only one who's going to have to resort to Wal-Mart. Better than nothing, however.

It's not a bad place to shop in my opinion, but I'm not sure about working there. I at least got my Aspire One at a Wal-Mart, which was cheaper than all the other alternatives on the market and I've also heard the best things about it.

If you do grab up a job soon, let me know how it is.

A friend of mine works with Wal-Mart and has been for a while. I'll see if I can get him to post here about it.

it is just like any other job some times u love it and then other days it is rough. You can advance quickly without a degree. I dont have any degree in managing but I am an assistant manager. Know they have changed our schedule from on 3 off 3 on 3 off 3 witch is assume. It gets rough around the holidays. I been working for walmart for 9 years and still there so i guess its not to bad overall

Hm, sounds pretty average, then... I'll probably give it a shot if I don't have anything else.

I think my college offers co-op jobs, so naturally I'm aiming toward those first...

At this point, I don't really care where I work anymore.

But, there isn't any Walmart in my immediate area.

Honestly, it's not that I look "down" on working at a Walmart. I mean, it would be the first "real" work I've ever had, and it seems like it wouldn't be so demanding at first. Our extremely-ghetto ass-mall also has a Target in it, but with that Super Walmart, I really don't know how much longer it'll be there.

But yeah, considering my resume is pretty much blank, I figure Walmart would be good for a first job.

My mom works at Wal-Mart and she absolutely hates it. She says that she gets no respect and is forced to work ridiculous schedules since they're to cheap to hire enough employees (my mom often has to be a substitue cahsier even though her main job is to stock shelves). Even though you may think that Wal-Mart might be generous since they have a ton of money you would be wrong. Christmas party for your kids? Don't expect it to be free, it's going to cost you $20. Pot luck lunch? Don't forget to give $2 to Wal-Mart even though they didn't make any of the food.

It may be different to work at a Wal-Mart in the US but if you can avoid working there than I would. Wal-Mart is probably going to pay you minimum wage anyway so if you can find another job that is close to your home than I would try to get that instead .

It also depends on what it is. I pretty much got forced into applying for Geek Squad at Best Buy despite not meeting any of their requirements.

Grocery stores could be fine too if one of those is nearby... I'd hope for a shelf-stocking job myself if I were to apply at one of those, though. Cashier just seems... awful.

A lot of places these days make you fill out the application online. Which takes like 30 minutes because of the damn test that you have to take before hand.

I've worked in retail for most of my jobs, and I've pretty much gotten the hang of it... I know how to deal with some annoying customers, etc. fairly well

I remember filling out a huge online application taking quite a while, and then at the very end getting rejected (like, automatically by the software)

I have never worked at a wal-mart personally, but I did have a friend that worked there on 3rd shift then got moved to 1st shift. He was a stocker/cashier when he was there. If you do 3rd shift as a stocker or anything like that, your pay will be a little better, but note its not all that fun at night unless the people there make it fun.

My friend liked it in a way, but he said in his own words"Its not worth it cause 9 out of 10 of people who work there are getting under pay cause of all the stuff you have to do."

no.

I can't speak for Wal-Mart personally but my good friend held a job at Target and said it was one of the worst jobs he'd ever had. Another friend held a similar job at K-Mart and claims the managers would always make racist jokes towards her and other miscellaneous stuff that seriously shouldn't fly in the work place I wouldn't know if Wal-Mart is any worse but I imagine they all tend to work under pretty much the same model.
