Yeah, in the old days, post counts, levels and EXP were shown graphically (at least in some themes) It was really slow on dialup though.

It wasn't slow on dialup (every image was only a few bytes, usually less than 50K for all images). It was just really hard on the server, since it had to generate hundreds of those for every thread view, and they were always different so you couldn't cache them.

I eventually replaced it with an old function that was depricated that generated the numbers in HTML (using 1.gif, 2.gif etc) ... that's used on the index but not really anywhere else right now.

The number graphics were the first things I turned off when joining I3 since I considered them pointless eyecandy.

I've actually grown somewhat to prefer the plain text method of displaying number of posts.

I missed it for a while at first, much like a variety of the board's schemes.

Speaking of schemes, weren't we supposed to bring the Mario scheme back at some point?

If I'm remembering right, said counter was counting toward Jul's second anniversary.

It was reused a bit after that for something, and it changed on July 4th to "7/4/09" or something.
