Bugs are hilarious



(Basically, the function that's supposed to load textures into memory isn't working quite right, and this is the result).

As far as sprite go, they're working. In my current version, Vent very happily runs in place and scrolls correctly with the tilemaps.

Quick Q here, are the graphics tiles going to be set up individually of the collision boxes (aka the ones that actually define walkable ground, spikes and such) or will they be combined into the tilesets? Just a Q.

Basically, the graphics for a tile are chosen from a single large graphics sheet, and the checkboxes on the left change how the sprites interact with the tile. (NOTE: those checkboxes are subject to change.) Think Super Mario World, that's sort've how sprites will interact with the level.

Peardian: Well, right now there's not much going on other than me programming, but by all means, graphics (either level or sprite), or design work would be brilliant. And yeah, it's megamanish. I suppose there's a ton of stuff, I mean for one we don't even have a concrete story yet, I"m just building a rather generic engine still.

As of right now that's not really known, but I'd predict either a high-tech or industrial theme, with an emphasis on technology. Of course, once the story and players/etc get sorted out that'll be straightened out. Though, if you do make a tileset, it's likely the story could be worked to include it.

Anyways, as far as the tileset format goes...

32x32px tiles, 32bpp RGBA. The image height and width each have to be a power of 2 above 16 and below 8192, eg 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, or 4096 pixels in each direction. This allows for a maximum of 16,384 unique tiles graphically. The engine itself allows for up to 65536 different defined tiles, which are a collection of gameplay flags and information about where in the level's bitmap the graphics for that tile are.

I got it. So the picture from earlier with blue/yellow/red tiles was literally that: tiles. Just like these.

The IRC channel has the read-only password, just /join #julgame using the IRC Chat link, or PM me if that won't work for you

Just keep in mind the source is a bit of a mess, and I'm pretty sure that without the magic combination of half a dozen libraries and include files it's probably not going to compile anytime soon.

Eventually once a few other code things get straightened out, everything will go up onto the SVN.

No pictures this time, but more progress nonetheless. Finished up Animations in the engine, and Animation editing in the editor. So, Animations are now working

The next little item on the list is adding sprites editing to the editor, which poses a bit of a UI consistency problem because whereas the tilemaps are painted on, sprites are object-based. So, not only will it take a bit longer to finish the feature, but sprites editing will also work differently, so that'll be something to watch out for.
