Yeah, it's best not to design just for you.

There may be people with older (or differently configured) monitors, vision problems, colour blindness, etc, trying to read your posts.

As I get older I find my biological sensitivity to blues in particular deteriorating. I've found I simply cannot read blue neon signs either; they make my eyes hurt so severely I get an instant headache.

I was not trying to be rude.

I just never thought anyone would have problems reading colored text on an as dark black BG as possible. :E

It has to do with the luminosity; the relative quantity of light emitted or reflected of the text and their background. Darker blues don't emit a lot of light, so they don't stand themselves apart enough from black.

Conversely we can look at colours that emit lots of light: a bright sunny yellow, for instance, wouldn't stand out much enough from white to be readable. Both yellow and white have very high luminosity values.

For text to be readable against a chosen background, it needs to have a big enough difference between luminosity values.

Same goes for high-saturation red and high-saturation blue together. When they both emit the same amount of light you get this visual strobing effect with your eyes.

And then you get horrible effects like this one where while the colours are very different, the luminosity is too close and oh god your eyes your eyes your eyes AAARRRGHHHHH.... and it would be even worse if I made the text smaller!! P.S. do not stare at this box too long.

And sorry, I wasn't trying to be rude either. I'd love to show you what I mean with the Colour Contrast Analyser with some screenshots, but I'm 0% through copying Windows XP files in VirtualBox.

Red on black is completely unreadable to some red-green colorblind individuals.

I'd go with light blue like this (#37A9FA) to match the background, maybe even a little lighter or white ...

The color recommended earlier (#7A99FF) looks like this, close enough

It's at least readable right now (#2550FF), but still too dark

That passes. And it is very legible.

And yes, you probably do have good eyes at your age. I had very good vision till I was about 25, then I got glasses for the first time. I am now short sighted and I hate this blue neon sign they have near my old place because it makes me think my brain is going to explode a la Scanners…

LOL, but yeah, I'm at the age where I'm only just starting to get some vision quirks. I can still see (mostly) very well though. I am not yet to the point where I need the screen resolution to be 800x600 and all text to be 12pt or above for me to read it

The fun thing about colour contrast is also that people biologically are less sensitive to blue anyway. We're actually the most sensitive to colours at the green end of the spectrum (I guess so we know know what stuff is OK to eat and what's not). The human eye and brain can see and differentiate between more greens than we can any other colour.

Blue (aside from the sky and its reflection) doesn't appear a lot within nature and we're far less sensitive to it. I suppose that's why it's one of the first colours I've found problematic at certain luminosity values.

I got glasses when I was about 19, but I probably needed them like two or three years before I finally got them

I really need my eyes checked again... it's been about two years since I last got a new prescription

My eyes are really bad... like around -6.50/-7.00... I even have trouble seeing the alarm clock in the morning
