NESticle is still a decent emulator for those stuck on really ancient comps, though... I had to use it in early 2008 when I was stuck on a 200mhz box running Win98 with 28MB of RAM.

I still don't get how some people find 1024x600/768 super restrictive. I had no issues migrating down to it from 1280x1024... but then again, I had that 640x480 step in between

I don't think I've ever even used Nesticle... the first NES emulator I remember using is Nester. I mainly use FCEU now.

I also still use ZSNES despite having started out using Snes9x (I switched way back in 2001). I use Snes9x for video recording sometimes, although it's rare that I ever have to. I don't even know why I've stuck with ZSNES... there's no real reason why I haven't switched to Snes9x. Chalk that one up to being too used to ZSNES, I guess. And netplaying.

Snes9x acts weird with my controllers... so I stick with ZSNES.

NES emulators... I actually use NesterJ (PSP) the most. On PCs, though, Nestopia since FCEU likes to be weird.

It depends on the program, but usually it only fills the main screen (specified in display settings) and leaves the other screen intact (unless there's a resolution change, then it pushes everything), although I usually can't switch to other programs (on the second screen) without Alt-Tab

I was fine with lower resolutions for a long time (I've had 512x384 for 5 years, then 640x480 for almost 2 years), but now I'm too used to my large desktop space to go back


I used NESticle from 1999 to 2001 (until I got Windows 2000 and couldn't run it properly anymore), it's still decent now (and the fastest by far) but a little far behind in accuracy, just good enough to run most games fine I think I used NesterJ after that, then FCEU, and now Nestopia ...

I use ZSNES because it was the first one I was introduced to. I don't think I'll change unless there's a SNES emulator with built in map/tile viewing capabilities like bgmapper a la VBA.

NESticle is excellent on low-end PC's.

Put it this way - I first started emulating on a 486/25. Only things you're going to run at full speed on that are NES and GB games. (NO$ for the latter.) Then I tried ZSNES on that PC... yes... I got 2-4 FPS.

I used to use ZSNES also. I switched to Snes9x mainly beacuse I got tired of abusing the "rewind" function on every game I played. I think that Snes9x also has a rewind function, but I don't know what hotkey it is and it gives a much better feeling playing the game more naturally than just pressing "T" every time I made a mistake.

Haven't played much though.

couldn't you just unmap the rewind hotkey or something

Yea, I used to use Genecyst back in the day for Mega Drive emulation, then switched to Gens, and now I use Kega Fusion ^_^

My old computer was 433 MHz, definitely not enough for PS1 or Saturn emulators (hell, even VBA was lagging with GBA games on that old computer >_>)...

I started emulating on an old Compaq Presario with Windows 98 in 2001, although I don't remember the stats

It was my parents' computer, and my dad was wondering why I was suddenly on it so much. He tried playing my first crappy hack, but he sucked at it I didn't have a gamepad then, so it was just keyboard control, and he wasn't that good at SMB1 anyway.

I'm not really into ROM hacking anymore... although I do play some fan-translations ^_^

However, stay away from RPGOne's FF6 fan-translation... Tom Slattery did a much better job when translating FF6 GBA ^_^

I was into ROM hacking in 2001 and 2002 and slightly 2003, then didn't do much ROM hacking until I got back into it this year I still played hacks sometimes though

You should be able to do whatever you like as long as you hack it yourself and only for yourself. The CT hack gained so much notoriety that Square couldn't ignore it.

Several months ago, Square issued a cease and desist order on Chrono Compendium, ordering the shutdown of all Chrono Trigger fan projects, including Crimson Echoes...

At least nothing prohibits hacking of any Final Fantasy games, AFAIK ^_^

(IIRC, I've never seen a hack of Mario, Sonic, Pokémon, or Final Fantasy get a C&D order...)

I made like a 2-level ROM hack of SMW before I got bored and gave up on it. Bloodstar says it was good. I'd like to see it again, but I have no idea where it is or what happened to it.

Other than that, I've only ever played ROM hacks.
