I basically went in order. SMB1, SMB2 (DDP), SMB3, SMW, YI, NSMB, YIDS
And throw SMB2 (Lost Levels) in there sometime after SMW.
Yeah. Pretty ironic right?
I had played both of them before - but not very long, and I never got past the first 1-2 worlds.
I just recently played through SMB3, SMW and Mario Adventure.
I'm not sure why I like SMW so much - it's not that good, but it has a certain charm the other Mario games don't have. The levels are mostly named after food which is pretty cool. The world map is linear enough to be easy to progress through yet there are loads of secret levels and paths and exits and shortcuts. There are a lot of hidden areas and the level designs seem a lot more memorable for me.
I'm hoping NSMBWii will bring some of that back. I heard that the levels had names.. but apparently they were just named by some person and aren't actually named in-game. That makes me sad.
