Most of mine in high school at least looked at homework, but sometimes they just made sure you did it and didn't care about the answers. Most of my teachers in college don't even collect homework, which is fine with me (well, except this semester!)

Yeah, this is what I usually expect. My teachers also looked for the homework in high school but didn't care at all about what you actually wrote there, as long as it made some sense you could write anything on there. Now, the teachers give homework but don't care if you actually do it

Most of my classes at university had graded homework too (counting for 20-40% total), sometimes even weekly, but it wasn't exactly like the repetitive exercises from high school and before ...

And for the few that didn't, the exams (midterm and final) counted for about half of the grade each, so that wasn't always better

I took a semester of classes in Germany, and over there the final exam is most of the grade. However, if you fail it, you only have to retake the exam itself and not the whole class. (I don't know if this is true of all German schools though.)

The best is when teachers assign a mark (say, 5 or 10%) for attendance. Or "class participation".

The humanities department at my school is obsessed with that. Sometimes it's even like 30% attendance and participation, and they often automatically fail people who don't show up enough even if they get perfect grades on all papers and tests.

I guess I just have cool teachers then. B] Really, I would hate having to actually turn stuff in. This is college, we’re all adults, and if we can’t understand the subject then we’ll either do enough work to learn the subject of our own volition or be weeded out.

I have one class this semester with grading for participation. It’s in a 160‐student lecture hall. How does that work?

It doesn't. Now, I have classes with about 30 people total or less, so we often have attendance taken. Unfortunately, it's hilariously dumb when you have an assignment in class that counts as attendance for the day. I had it totally completed, then left before realizing my error when my teacher was likely long gone from the school.

But I find that it's pretty easy to get behind in school work in college. I can really do my homework when I want to in time for the next class, so it's not like I have to worry about "ZOMG I HAVE 6 HOURS OF HOMEWORK I HAVE TO GET DONE BY TOMORROW!!!!1", but it's way easier to forget some of them since there's more time to decide when to do it. It a good deal to not have to do it all in one night, though.

About 95% of the homework we got in high school was

a) for a grade
b) highly repetitive
c) incredibly boring
d) ridiculously ambiguous

Have fun completing every even question on the page. Oh, by the way, there are 50 of them.

If you're going to revamp homework to get rid of these problems, you should probably revamp society first.

There's a difference between teaching and then using a few homework problems to ensure you understand the concept and not teaching and relying on homework to ruin the rest of your night.

In my experience, most teachers do the latter.

I hated it for a while too because I could often work things out in my head just fine. Mostly in arithmetic classes (we couldn't start algebra until 7th grade). Like, if the problem was "If you divide $100 among 8 people, how much should each person get?" and you write $12.50, it would be wrong. You'd have to show every step of the long division. In algebra and later, I couldn't do the problems in my head as well so writing down the steps actually helped.

Another thing I hated was, you must have units or it's all wrong, regardless of how obvious the units were. Like, for "What is 2 m plus 5 ft?" I can understand, but for "What is 2 kittens plus 5 kittens?" any moron would be able to tell that the unit is kittens. You shouldn't lose all credit for writing just 7.
