I don't have that kind of problem unless hardware issues interfere.
Like support for the network card breaking totally during an upgrade from Debian 4 to 5. (I have since installed Debian unstable simply because Debian 5 will never work with the network card.)
Or virtual terminals being invisible because the X.Org siliconmotion driver is buggy.
Or GRUB mysteriously not functioning when LILO works just fine. I still don't know what's up with that.
I guess I can blame it on trying to install Linux on an old crappy laptop.
