The only thing that was nice about the AOL client was that you always had your email up in the corner. Other than that, everything else sucked, stupid parental controls as well (finally circumvented them after some time). I'm so glad that we have wireless now and that I don't have to deal with that stupid crap.

I'm still using one of my old Web 1.0 free space thing for image hosting.

Basically, their anti-hotlink thing doesn't know about .pngs, so I can freely abuse them.

They never did update it to fix that.

I remember when 56k seemed so fast. Download a 1MB file in under 10 minutes, wow!

Then I got DSL.

And recently I got even better DSL.

So yeah. Screw nostalgia.

28.8k is also probably the slowest I've ever used, and this was in like, 2005. I was quite poor and had an old ass computer and no extra modems but some old-ass ISA modem that was the size of an SB16 (I also had an SB16 ISA :p). I used bittorrent on it, and got a good like, 2-3KB/s A long time ago I had AOL (not too long ago, maybe 2000?) that was simply uselessly slow it had to have connected at somewhere around 9600 baud, since trying to download a demo of Doom took about a day (This was AOL 3.0, earliest we had was 2.5.).

I was always there with 56k or faster. Even back in 1998, when I first encountered the internet.

It was quite nice, considering the alternative (slow) choices.

Remember when ISDN was the major 'fast connection' choice?

I remember having a software that would notify me when a phone call was incoming, so that I could disconnect the internet and take the phone call.

I got my AOL for free by complaining once a month. Never paid a godamn thing to their overpriced internet.

Sad thing is that I was stuck on Dial up for awhile now. Until I convinced my family to get DSL. They were happy on the price and that I was not on the phone line no more

Yeah, that wasn't really great.

Second phone line? Ha, I only had one. What sucked was when I accidentally left it on one night and tried calling my parents while I was somewhere else... D:

oh good god I had completely forgotten about dealing with dialup and one phone line. I think AOL would just disconnect when someone called... but AOL would just disconnect anyway, so who's to say.

No no, you didn't forget that. You just managed to block it out of your memory. It never happened.

Then again, who can forget having to get off the internet so that someone could make a phone call if you only had one line.

I don't know, I guess it's like how I never think about the times I'd carry a portable tape recorder I painstakingly saved $20 to buy so I could listen to music I recorded from the radio. it just sounds so ghetto.

Didn't EVERYONE do that at some point, though?

I was lucky - I just grabbed stuff from my dad's expansive record collection. I'd need quite a few iPod's to fit all that stuff on there... need to take a picture of it one day if we have a collection thread.

I did this a lot when I was younger. I would be so close to the speaker with my tape player/recorder.

I think he's still around the Pokemon Community forums... He's known as Jeremy now and he says stuff like "hello, sweeties" and whatnot.

Frightful.

I'm not sure which is worse, the fact that he's still around, or the fact that you still go to Pokemon Community forums.
