I refuse to play a game without reading the instruction manual first (and preferrably seeing someone else play it, and then getting to test drive it in a secret underground private bunker.)

Game manuals: yes, but only for background info. Instructions: Never.

I usually do just to make sure that I don't get surprised by any features. Most things are just "hook up, put install disc in and go", but some stuff (like the printer I got last year) is a little more complex... you need to know when to plug it into the USB port and so on otherwise the driver install will fail.

It depends on how important it is that I get what I'm trying to do done correctly.

Basically, I at best skim through a game's manual after I've already played it, especially since most games are self-explanatory, but I'll read the entire manual if I was about to do something that could put my life at risk.

---------------------------- In the case of games, I absolutelly always read them. Sometimes to know all the menus and stuff since the begining in much more detail than the in-game tutorial will tell you, but mostly to get some background information before actually starting playing. I blame dialogueless games.

I read game manuals depending on the game I'm playing. For games I don't really want much spoiled, I won't, like Metroid games. For others, I'll skim through them. As for other instructions, yeah I do most of the time, unless the thing is easy enough to figure out without needing them.

Read them years ago. Nowadays, they just don't have the same ~~exciting~~ content that all of the older manuals had, so I see no point.

To be honest I pretty much never read the manuals to games beyond a quick skim, unless someone else is playing the game while I read. It doesn't help that nowadays most games seem to put all the instructions in the actual game via tutorial level. I do make note to try and read instructions in the off chance I get something that isn't a game, like an external hard drive I got earlier this year. Things that are more likely to overheat and explode than a game DVD/card, basically. Of course, if it's putting something together, I read on to do that.

If you included things like README.TXT files... I probably need to get myself into the habit of reading those more, too.

To be fair, if you can't memorize the Kama Sutra and need to refer to it...

I always read game manuals as well even if I know exactly what I'm getting into. Some of them have higher production values than others.

I rarely read game manuals, unless there's something I'm just not getting at all. As for installs and assembly, it depends on the difficulty. Most computer hardware is pretty straight forward; cheap furniture with Engrish instructions are not.
