The best memories of my childhood were going to the Nickel Arcade (yes, EVERY game was just a nickel) and it had great games. It was shut down in 1998 because the Emporium went out of business, but it wasn't fun since 1995 because they sold all of the good cabinets.

The other thing that I remember doing was riding motorcycles at John's Peak but then environmentalists, locals and concerned moms made it pretty much illegal to do anything there beyond organized events, even though all of their teenage sons and daughters sneak up there at night and get drunk and die in car accidents. Then again, I don't find that too bad because they're only thinning out their own numbers. About 20 less idiots to ruin our gene pool every year!

Lastly, you can't even ride a bike on the sidewalk anymore. I'm thinking this got passed because somebody was butthurt because they had to step out of the way for 2 seconds. Ever since this happened, there have been bikers all over the road and near-collisions are a daily circumstance. Smart move, considering there is only one freaking bike path in all of Medford!

Man...what part of Mass was it? We used to have one right by my house, it was huge and amazing and it apparently got taken down and converted in to some generic cookie-cutter/mix and match playground that's not only smaller but 800x less fun and interesting. There's also a skate part next to it now. Super cool, right?

I spent a lot of my childhood in the woods behind my house, where me and my friends would do similar things to what you described--we had a little "city", which was made around the natural structures which worked surprisingly well for such a thing. There was also a few old stone walls from god knows when, back when the whole area used to be farmland (couldn't be further from that now, I mean...its the suburbs of a semi-major city but its still interesting)...I don't know, I used to eat that stuff up. I also seemed to remember playing some sort of Donkey Kong Country-themed game based around that area...huh.

My SNES was a HUGE part of my growing up, my Gameboy too. They contributed SO much to my imagination and influenced greatly how I was able to play outside and with other things I'd have. Despite people who would think kids would sooner sit inside and play games all day, mine would actually inspire me to go out and go explore ;x I'm beyond bummed that the SNES, while playing today, no longer has that effect one me... great nostalgia though. I guess some things we really do grow out of :\

The playground was in a town called Ludlow, Massachusetts. It's near Springfield, Mass. iirc.

Oh, cool. My dad's company built a school out in Springfield, so I sorta know where that is. Don't know the area too well necessarily
