Alright, I'm not staff or anyone with any forum of power [EDIT: Apparently, I am now], but I think I'm going to take a bit of initiative and make a bit of a forum rule system. Here goes.

This is MetalMan88 here, I'm going to add to this already useful post some more information on how to use this forum. The FAQs of course remain. -Metal_Man88



BEFORE POSTING A THREAD


Many junk things have been posted in here. It's time for that to end. When you go to post a thread, it must be somewhat like the following:


  • A tool or project
  • A theory (with information to back it up)
  • A new discovery
  • A mod or hack itself (there's more rules on those, keep reading)
  • Something informative that isn't blatantly obvious
  • A well-phrased non-duh Question


It must posess the following if it is to survive long in this forum:

  • Pictures (If a tool or a project)
  • A constructive use (If a tool)
  • Quality (Nobody's going to be reading a bunch of gibberish)
  • A link to the related patch/program (Especially with hacks, but also with tools; we don't want to just be teased with the images and a 'COMING SOON' message)
  • Some interesting or positive quality (You could make a tool to mess up all the colors without reason, but who would use that???)
  • If a question or theory, some practical reason to ask it or reason for you to posit it (You could post "Penguins are always blue! OMG" but that'd not be useful)
  • Something else along these lines


Furthermore, if you are posting hacks, you must follow these guidelines when posting a hack/mod:

FAQs

Before you ask ANY QUESTIONS, please read the forum FAQ, the Toad's Tool FAQ and the Toad's Tool help thread. There are few things more annoying than being asked the most mundane, half-way obvious and easily answered questions over, and over, and over by someone who didn't have the courtesy to read the FAQ.

ROM POLICY

Direct linking to any commercial* ROM, be it the vanilla game or a hacked version, is expressly forbidden. IPS/NINJA/PPF/whatever patches are okay. However, what you do in private is none of our business.

*Commercial refers to a ROM that was dumped from a video game that was released on a console for profit. Homebrew ROMs, meaning that they were made by amateur programmers who are coding for the system for non-profit reasons, are perfectly fine to link.

HOW TO GET HELP

If you've read the FAQs and help thread and you still have questions, post a reply to the help thread with clear and concise information on your problem. If you post a question simply saying "I open the program and it crash what do I do" - you will probably get no help at all. We're not mind readers, we can't know exactly what the issue is. If you need help on a feature, be specific on what you need to be done. If you're having technical issues, be very specific. If the program is behaving oddly, note very specifically what is going wrong ("it turns black" is NOT specific at all). If the program is crashing or failing to start up, post exactly what the error message says, along with system specs. The more in depth you explain your problems, the greater your chances of being helped.

(Take note that I'm just writing this FAQ; I do not actually use Toad's Tool myself so I will probably not be able to answer your question)

DON'T BE AN IDIOT

This should be common sense, but I'm going to throw this down for consistency. First off, type reasonably well. "hey wen u open th rom ware do i find how2 chang tihng?s" is absolutely unacceptable. If English is not your native language, there will be much more leniency for you. Still, don't use it as an excuse to not make sense. You don't need to be completely perfect by any means, but at least give an effort.

Another part of not being an idiot is being reasonably nice to people. Don't be rude. If a newbie comes along and violates everything I've said in this thread, please don't just roast them on the spot. Many of the users will likely be young and won't know much of common forum decency. Instead, just give them a friendly link to this FAQ and leave it at that. If you jump all over them with a series of personal attacks and general flaming, you may quickly find yourself being the one in trouble. If a person repeatedly violates the rules, don't play moderator; let someone who IS a moderator/admin take care of the situation.

PUNISHMENT AND ENFORCEMENT

All rules are usually enforced. The punishment for breaking the rules generally goes as follows:

First offence: warning
Second offence: three day ban
Third offence: week long ban
Fourth offence: indefinite ban

This is not set in stone and in varies per situation.

CONCLUSION

Don't be intimidated by this FAQ! It's actually not that complicated. In summary:

Read the FAQ
Don't post ROM links
Type reasonably well
Don't be a jerk

That's all you really need to know!

FOOTNOTE

While it's no means a rule, if you want people to try out your hack, post screenshots. Post them in the thread. No one will download it if you do. Even if you put screenshots in the RAR, no one will download it. People need to see what they're downloading before they consider downloading it, mmkay?

And a final note from the administration, to those who think they can ignore the rules or are entitled to clogging the forum to junk.

By the way, where's the paragraph on NINJA and IPS patches?

Just wondering, since if you manage to make M64 too big for an IPS patch you WILL be needing a NINJA patch

Part of the level data in the Extended SM64 ROM is over the 16MB limit (the total size is 24MB) so some of the things that are edited won't be patched with an IPS patch.

I recommended standardizing over the PPF patch format for SM64 hacks, and that's what TT64 users have been using for now.

PPF is the "Playstation Patch Format", but it's already used to patch many other types of file, and there are dozens of programs supporting it.

I chose PPF over NINJA simply because there's no NINJA patching tool on the Mac, but there are PPF tools on all platforms. Since all SM64 patches released until now are in .PPF format, all patches I will release will be in PPF and since TT64 is for Mac and Windows, it makes sense to use PPF over NINJA, even though some of you may not care about the Mac platform.

how do you scale if the project is major or minor? does it depend on the progress of the hack? how do you tell when it is makor?

Full customization - Creating everything of your own, like deleting all the data and applying by scratch - that is as major as it gets.

Okay, I'm not going to bite anyone's head off over this.

Make a thread for your hack if you feel like it, or make a screeenshots for other people. If there is such a screenshots thread, use it unless you'd like to showcase a large hack (which will not exist at this point).
