Any specific ways you'd want the script written for dialogue if it came down to it?

I'm kinda getting a better idea of how things play out for the story idea now (although, once again, intel helps) so if worse came to worse I could possibly dedicate some time to actually getting a nice amount of text written out for it. I mean it's not that I don't have experience doing long-winded, bull-shit laden dialogue either...

..Well basically, I suppose if you have something you want to write, go ahead. Since there's been nothing done to lay out any actual script formats or such, just write dialogue as you want and we can worry about formatting it for cutscenes later.

Well, reason I make mention of it is because I didn't know if you wanted to make it where it was like RKS's Story Mode when it came to bosses and whatnot. I mean sure it'd be less work for one to write dialogue if it came down to not doing that but it's always a thought.

Not to mention I could attempt to sharpen whatever it is that's given for character dialogue and I'd assume anyone with a bit of writing prowess would give the same reviews back at each other.

Well, as far as audio goes I'm looking at there being a decision between BASS, SDL_Mixer, OpenAL, or SDL_Sound. I'm leaning towards SDL_Mixer, but that presents a problem with looping audio using start and end markers. BASS might solve this, but I don't know how easily it'll work with cross-platform stuff since it apparently has different libraries, however it might work better for looping, as well as for general filetype support. I have no idea about openAL, so if someone else is familiar with that please let me know, and lastly there's SDL_Sound which would basically provide a bit of a framework but also require a fair amount of work on the side of the programmers, if I understand it correctly.

Also of note is that SDL_Mixer is pre-set to work with sound effects in conjunction with music.

All right, after discussion on IRC and some thinking, I've decided how to set up the audio format.

For looping music, there will be two files: musicname-i.ogg and musicname-l.ogg. the -i file plays once, and when it's complete the -l music plays until stopped in an infinite loop. I'll be using SDL_Mixer for now as it seems to be the simplest of the audio options I had to use, as well as supporting sound effects simply enough as well.

Right now I'm on break at work, so I'm going to work on the format for level scripts, and have that done later on. The format specification for levels in it's entirety is about ~40% done.

No, it's actually pretty short (1-2 pages). It might get a lot longer once I write down the specifics of each command or how the levels load, how the tiles are mapped, etc. For now it's just a small amount of info that's been written down, most of the info's in my head still.

Okay then. Idea for game modes. Story and Arcade. Story will have each character battle their 4 with story, then meet up. Arcade you pick 2 at the start (Only Rain and Teyla unlocked until story mode is beaten with the other characters.) The bosses of those 2 characters are displayed as in classic Megaman games. You switch between the 2 characters, and the bosses drop an item which you pick up for their power (a la MegaMari). The boss items give one power to their character, and one shared between the other 4, depending on who picks it up. After 8 bosses, to the fortress to kick some ass.

Also, an in-game, and an in-menu shop. The in-game shop offers E-Tanks and such, where the in-menu one offers secrets and extra costumes.

Also, achievements, which unlock stuff to be bought in the in-menu shop.

How credits to buy things come up, I'm not sure yet. :x

The only other way I could think of doing it is like in Megaman 8, being that the credits are scattered throughout the stages and there's a limited amount of them.

Well, for the in-menu one I figured a score counter (or something of the sort) while playing the game could give you points to buy stuff. The in-game one would be MM9 style, screws, scattered through stages, sometimes dropped by enemies.

A combination of the two ideas seems like the best plan if we are going to have a shop that sells generic powerups and a shop that sells unique gameplay-related things. (Obviously, the dropped credits are for the powerup store, and the limited-powerups are for the special store)

By the way, I didn't really expect a song at this point, but it was quite catchy, nonetheless. Of course, I think it would sound better in a non-Mario Paint form.
...Just what part of the game did you make this for, anyway?

The only difference between RKS's story mode and arcade mode is added text from what I've seen.

As for the others, not sure yet, maybe they'll be battling robots and stealing their powers whilst Rain recollects her spirits and Teyla beats up her friends for (insert reason here). Of course, the abilities should be made up by the character's writer.

I'm damn near dropping the VS. Yuuko and Addy part at this point, but there'll still be Meizuki if I do.

Giga: nice music, though two things:

A) The intro doesn't work too well, it's too drawn out and the one instrument doesn't work well

B) That music might work best as an intro theme if it had a few more unique segments and then an ending instead of just loops repeatedly.

As far as the level format goes, it's up to 3 pages (Measuring a document by it's page count is like grading a programmer on Lines of Code imo ;P) in the Visual Studio text editor at 1440x900px resolution. I still haven't touched the level scripting functions, but I'm about ~80% done the format spec on the bytecoded part of the level data. The level scripting and general format is designed to be fairly flexible and dynamic, too, which should make room for plenty of imaginative level designs. I'll have the format posted when it's done, probably within the next couple days. If anyone who's making a character or enemy has a specific interaction they want their character to be able to make with the level, now is a great time to post it (example: Kasua's ground shocker attack (not posted) will only work along 'conductive' tiles.)

Note: the scripts are contained in a separate, text-based file from the bytecoded level data.

So the level spec is getting closer to being done, overall I'd have to guess it's about 60% of the way there.

I'm leaving a bunch of wiggle room in the document as well so that the format can be altered to fit in the various abilities of the playable characters, just like there's a few bits in there that are specific to Kasua's moves.

Bonus Boss X should just be a black shadow with red eyes, with a (very) prominent counter of 06'18"00 and 6 life bars with 63 HP each.

The actual fight itself would consist of generally weak attacks (mostly an endurance match) and a lot of damage, so taking damage really wouldn't be a big worry, making more focus on actually causing damage.

Because so help you if that timer runs out... Game Over.
