Also, think of it like this.

No rational Medic is going to Ubercharge a scout.

Some of the achievements got in the way of playing legitimately. Killing 3 people with the Axe in one life isn't productive. Using the flamethrower + shotty is.

Playing weak D trying to get 20 kills in a row isn't productive. Going where you need to, and self-sacrificing if the situation calls for it, is.

I enjoy the update because I get rewarded for playing regularly instead of doing an arbitrary task.

Just like you get levels, EXP, and money on this forum by being an active contributor as opposed to, say, writing a post without the letter "E".

This is clearly a personal preference vs personal preference thing.

I'm kinda split on this. It'd be kinda nice for everyone to be able to get the items when they start out.

Though... Unlocking a class's items really isn't that difficult in my opinion. As soon as I started playing on different maps instead of being cooped up in 2fort, I started getting achievements like crazy. I understand some of the achievements are kinda nuts, like ubercharging a scout, but I felt like those achievements could be ignored and would still allow you get enough achievements to get the items.

I kinda felt like playing the game less the moment I realized I only had the Ubersaw to be unlocked. Like, I used to play on my own and when others play. Now I usually stick to playing with others, or I just don't play at all.

Also, I thought that killing 3 people with the axe in one life was really meant for the flamethrower + axtinguisher.

No, your stuff is still there. You can just get old and new items now without doing anything at all. You can even sit in spectator and suddenly discover items you already have. It's stupid, pointless, and is completely random. I enjoyed getting achievements for items, so this update holds basically nothing for me beyond a few buffs for classes and some useless achievements.

I'm sure everyone wouldn't be complaining if Valve actually said what caused the items to unlock. Seems kinda too random... probably still fun for team play but random all the same. It would be like having a BFG 9000 right off the bat in a Doom deathmatch.

That would only eliminate a small amount of complainers, since the Steam forums are literally filled with people saying they enjoyed unlocking achievements for weapons.

You know, I take back the gripes that I may have had. I was originally split with the system, but...

With my love of stealth games, all of my experience playing as a Spy, playing on a official Valve maps (as in good maps), I managed to get 15 Spy achievements in such a short amount of time. If it was the way it was before, I would've just about unlocked everything for the spy, and I would have been right back to feeling like how I felt when I realized all I needed was the Ubersaw.

So I tip my hat to Valve. They must have realized players with vast experience as a certain class would have unlocked these things after just a few games.

P.S.: The Dead Ringer is FREAKIN' AWESOME. I played several games on the 2fort server, with an almost full server, and I managed to get the intel out on my own about 80% of the time. The Dead Ringer plays beautifully with my patient-but-sometimes-impatient nature. It's not something you want to take out in the middle of an open field, however. Though, if you have a good offensive partner, it can work miracles.

I just... Don't want the unlocks. It just doesn't feel right to get them through the way they have it now. I want to receive my ubersaw through medic milestone 3 not through 'You got killed! Here's your prize!' I would also like to wait to see if valve caves into the negative commentary and re-adds milestones for Spy and Sniper.
