I cannot see Valve putting this into the game. At all. They had the models before, maybe this is just going along with the fired-team gimmick. I hope. But dammit, they're showing the achievements with it...urg-whaaak...

Also, tell me I'm not the only one that has something against "virtual piss". Because really, if you can imagine it in mind, you can imagine it through your senses. And I don't want to smell that.

How To Win At Arena Mode - For Incompetent Morons

1. MEDIC. You need one. There should generally be one for every 3 offense players (Pyro, Soldier, Heavy, Demo). Pick someone who's going to be out on the front lines taking the most heat and, after pre-buffing your team, stick with them. Don't deviate too far away, but if a teammate drops by for a quick chat, heal them up too (assuming you're not under fire). Similarly, guard your medic.

A good team needs a medic to win.

2. Dispensers are useful, but not as much as Medics, mostly because they're not mobile. Still, put nearby, teammates can find these to be of good use.

3. Be well-balanced. A few of each class can do you wonders if you work as a team.

4. Work together. Going off on one-person "rushes" is an excellent way to get yourself murdered and give your murderer free crits. So just... don't.

5. Spies and Scouts are primarily useful for letting you know what state the enemy is in, i.e. if they're all going some way or another, or what. Use them wisely. Naturally, though, Spies should communicate with their team to sap + obliterate sentries.

And last of all:
6. Your Medic is precious. Your enemy's medic is just as precious. Prioritize it as a target! Remember that in Arena, with a Medic, any non-fatal damage will be healed by the team Medic at the first chance they get. Kill the Medic and every bit of health you take away is that much more killing to the enemy team.

In other words: TEAMWORK TEAMWORK TEAMWORK.

This is why I'm beginning to dislike alltalk servers. The community it builds is great, but the lack of coordination is just... bleh.

Some extra commentary on Arena:

1) If no one is willing to go medic, have an engie. Dispensers aren't mobile, but they do supply metal and ammo which is nice. Also a sentry can destroy a diminishing team.

2) Pyro is a great class for arena if you play it wisely. DO NOT run out there blazing away as soon as you get the chance to move. Act like a spy and take alternate routes. If you don't kill someone right away, don't worry. They're on fire and that alone could slowly kill them if there's no medic/water around. It also causes chaos.

3) This doesn't work for every circumstance, but taking out the heavy and medic combo if one exists on the other team before they can build an uber. An uber at the end of the round will RUIN you. I PROMISE.

4) Remember, there's still a point to capture. Killing is important, but sometimes you can win a round against a way more powerful team by just getting on the point while they're distracted. I would recommend the spy or pyro as a good distraction class.

5) Be mindful of your health and ammo. If there's no medic/dispenser on your team and taking one for the team will actually help rather than hurt, do it. I died taking out a sentry as a pyro once and that alone helped us win the round.

I have to say I like all talk on Arena, if only for the commentary from people who are dead

it becomes a spectator sport which is kinda fun.

What would be nice is while alive, teamchat; while dead, alltalk. So you and the other dead people can hear each other, but nobody actually alive can.

Also, I've found that it seems like KritzKreigs help more, but eh.

And yeah, I never said they were useless; I've gone in several games so far where I've sat near a Dispenser to stay alive since nobody else would.

P.S. Obvious tip: If you're a Medic, don't run out in front of your teammates if you value your head not having any bullets in it.

So instead of getting the huge interest boost that I wanted from this update, it instead kills many of my reasons of playing the game. I cannot believe that items now just drop for you randomly. A soldier killed someone in this server and suddenly the message "NAME has found: The Cloak and Dagger". Seriously, how stupid. I wanted to get achievements to get items, so that when I got it I felt a sense of standing out and accomplishing something. Now, achievements to me are completely worthless and I don't even want to play as the two updated classes.

You fucked up Valve.

It's everything, Kirbynite got the Razorback playing Spy. Another person got the Ambassador on the server I was on.

As opposed to the prior system, where people (including yourself, remember?) just go to achievement_box_v3 or whatever, farm out all the items, and leave those of us who play legitimately in the dust.

I never did that. I played legitimately for my items. The person I bought this account from did achievement server shit for the Heavy and Pyro. As the steam forums are already indicating, many people enjoyed the previous method better. It's challenging so it makes you enjoy the game that much more. You also got experience with that class while getting said achievements.

The counter argument tends to be this...
"As a new player, the concept of the experienced players not only being more skillful, but also having weapons that'll take me a while to get is something that seemed like a kick in the face."
You know what's a kick in the face? The fact that I spent 13 hours of Scout to get all of his items, felt great about it and had fun doing it, only to walk in to a server and see people just getting his items for no fucking reason as supplied by Valve. They did nothing to get them but push a button. It's nearly the same as people just typing !givemeall in achievement servers, which fine, they're cheaters, but at least I have the choice of doing that or not.

"If you weren't having fun, you're playing games for the wrong reasons."
And my response? Considering the large backlog of games I have (many of which have actual storylines and progression), the pressure to see how good I could do to earn achievements to get the items in TF2 was what drove me many times to play that game over others. Now I have nearly no incentive beyond what it has been since I unlocked my last Scout weapon, "It's fun.".

It's a kick in the face to me because for a few weeks now, I've refreshed pages and talked about the update, knowing in the back of my mind I would have a blast playing the classes and working hard to unlock their weapons. Now I'm handed an easy mode that can't be backed out of, and I have hardly any interest in playing them now.

Congratulations to you casual and new players but to be honest, given your status it's understandable you wouldn't enjoy getting them the old way.

1st: Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Otherwise, what good would talking do?
2nd: Ever heard of shock? Some people (self included) had that happen from the update. I'll bear with it, but I won't like it.

And: So, if weapons are now random drops, would that mean that there is now a slight variation to each and every weapon coming soon?

"Back in '08, I had just got TF2. This is back when the Scout update did not exist. I was a noob. After I got Dynasty, I got curious. I asked about achievements and played told me you unlocked new weapons with them. I played my favorite class at the time, the Heavy, trying to get the achievements. someone recommended to me that I just farmed for them. I wanted this to be legitimate. Three days and many kills later. I got it. Heavy Milestone 1. Seeing the sadvitch was so awesome if you didn't farm for it. I was hooked.

For the next five months of just playing and not farming, I unlocked the weapons for Pyro and Heavy. I just recently got the Force-A-Nature. Every little class achievement I got was like a personal pat on the back from the game. And the ultimate prize: A new weapon. every new weapon felt like a new toy that I had EARNED. It made the game play experience so much more..... more.

No longer. I still have medic to do and two scout items, but that will be it. No more achievements that are actually fun to get. Most of the hype I got from this update was getting class achievements from my favorite class, the spy, and getting that special pat on the back every once in a while, and even further, that cool new "toy" that I EARNED. I didn't think my hype would be let down... especially from Valve. TF2 just lost a lot of narritive for me, especially I wont be trying to ACHIEVE the new toys for the engineer (my second favorite) some time in the future..."

I don't care about the farmers. Screw them. The idea is to be able to go up tot hem and say, "I got those weapons and I got them legitimately!" All this damn work I put into heavy when I could have waited for this and done it as pyro... nuh uh...

I like the update but for this rape of the achievement system. That's all I have to say right now.
