Riiiight

Or, worse, they are traumatised by their experiences in maths classes.

Hmmm...that rings a bell...

On that note, what is/was your favorite subjects while in school?

I laughed a little when I saw 'Maths'. And apparently they should be fun.

Math in the general sense isn't really that bad...

It's when you get into Discrete Math and around that area (Calc, etc.) that you begin to lose me. Geometry can burn in a veritable hell.

Chemistry's shit. As long as you're telling me not to diagram a disaccharide or something like in Organic Chemistry...

I never liked math, in any form. I remember going nuts over the quadratic formula when I was younger.

Yea, that would be your Geometry for you.

Although quadratic formula, again, is shit...since it's really remembering the formula and then plug and chug.

Oh, yeah. Right you are. I always had a thing for numbers and whatnot, but not shapes (or how to calculate them).

My problem with it was the fucking proofs.

I hated proving my math in any class in the series...if I got an answer I shouldn't have to back it up unless it's obvious that I need to (higher-end stuff...Calc again).

Urg, I hated that as well. Why show the work if you figured out the answer without having to write down a bunch of scribble?

Because calculators exist.

Not to mention that the instructor wants you to follow the exact method that was taught...regardless if you learned it different or found a better way of doing it.

Every of us has a ⑨ inside.
----------------------------
Maths when the teacher is awesome and not an old jerk tired of his job and obsessed with trigonometry. Which I spent most the time trying to prove useless.

I had both kinds. Grades went from 8-10 to failing on purpose. (Then again, most everyone there were old jerks tired from their jobs obsessed with something. I am so glad I am out of there... )

But yeah, Maths has always been favorite subject, partially becouse I had good teachers, partially becouse I am activelly interested in them. But I definitively can see why is it so hated... How these people don't realize they are doing it wrong is beyond me.

And then there's English... as a secondary language. Sure I already was fluent in it, but it let me polish certain things. I am sure if I had the chance to learn another one such as japanese by then I would be also somewhat fluent in it now.

My geometry teacher was fun, but that didn't stop me from tanking in that class.

Maths is fun when it is discrete math or linear algebra... vector calculus is also kinda cool.

Basically Math and Tech classes were the only classes in high school I really enjoyed... everything else was just kinda blah. Physics was cool but none of my other science classes really interested me that much.

We also got to watch the Matrix in Algebra 2, very good times.

Math's fun when you have a decent teacher. Otherwise....

I was better at drama, photo and history than all of my other subjects. And in English when I was able to just write stories and hand them in as assignments (that was all I did in 8th grade).

My high school sucked so the math classes were too easy and I didn't learn anything. They mostly just taught the basics of the curriculum patched together with "shortcuts" to doing everything that only apply to certain situations, with absolutely not information on why something works or how to truly solve the problem. Left me completely unprepared for college.

Yeah, the high school here teaches you for the test, and not much else.

I liked math until grade 11. I was always given extra stuff to do because I'd get everything done and be sitting around bored. heh. But yeah, in grade 11, I had a guy who was actually a gym teacher, not a math teacher, and if you didn't quite get something and asked him to explain/show you again, he'd do it so fast you couldn't follow, mumbling under his breathe, and then go 'See? Like that.' Uh, no, I don't see.

Then halfway through the semester, we got a different teacher, new to teaching, who had the squeakiest, highest pitched voice I've ever heard. I couldn't listen to her without getting a headache. So, I started just working out how to do things from the text books, but that wasn't the "right way." Bleh. I could do the problems and whatnot, but when it came to the tests, she'd dock marks because I didn't 'show my work' the way she wanted it done, so my marks tanked. I passed, barely.

The next year when I signed up for a course and walked in the first day and saw her, I transferred to something else after class was over. She wanted to have our parents' numbers and emails so she could contact them if we didn't finish our homework, wanted us to sign a "contract" saying that we'd do our homework every day, and that we'd have all assignments in on time, etc., and if we didn't, we'd have detention until it was done. In principle, maybe it's a good idea? But with seniors in high school, not so much. That, and I already didn't like her, so it bothered me more.

Math wasn't mandatory for all four years of high school, so I took an alternative (I think a language? I don't remember anymore). I still think math is neat, but I have no interest in trying to do it anymore, which kind of sucks.

Shiny new layout!

Yeah, I love math.

Gonna major in it.

And yeah, proofs kinda suck.

My favorite subjects are Music and Math.

I have to admit, though, I hate proving my work, and I'm happy my writing is so small the teacher doesn't bother to check anyways.
