I don't know how to use the <div> commands, so I am basically stuck with tables... not that there's anything wrong with that.

Your layout seems to be stretching into the posts underneath it when you make long posts, at least in Firefox.

I love table-less layouts. Mine generally are table-less, I CSS.

I'm also amused that so many people insist on hanging on to tables for layout. It's just so wrong. I'd go into the technical reasons why, but there is always the fact that this is a forum, nobody gives a shit and the technical reasons don't really matter here.

I suppose it could derail the thread, but I have been curious on why tables are seen as deprecated, and haven't been able to find a decent explanation...

Xkeeper -- in which browser? I did test this (admittedly, last year) in IE, Firefox, Safari, etc and it worked fine, but perhaps I have not copied the code over correctly from another forum. Also could you describe the nature of the "break" ?

Imajin -- One of the main reasons they don't use Tables anymore is it's become very important to seperate layout from content. For the purposes of this forum it doesn't really matter.

Tables load slower than CSS, so CSS for layouts can make pages load faster. It also lowers your hosting costs as less data is continually sent to browers. It makes redesigning easier and more effiicent (depending on how they are implemented) improves search engine results, makes it easier to bring visual consistency across an entire website, and is more accessible than tables.

I'm guessing none of you guys give a shit about search engine optimisation, consistency or people with disabilities, but you might care about bandwidth costs.

Oh! And I think I know the cause of the layout breaky I have. I haven't set up hotlinking for "rustedmagick.com" on my webhosting. That's not caused by CSS. That's an Apache (.htaccess) thing.

EDIT: Yes, it's to do with my hosting. It is not allowing users at http://jul.rustedmagick.com to view images hosted on my server. I attempted to fix but I got Fatal Error: Unable to read data from /dev/urandom (Permission denied). Please contact your system admin to have them repair the problem. so meh. The pictures will load once it is fixed.

In the meantime, it looks like this and as far as I know doesn't break on the forum (I've never had any problems) except for when hotlinking is broken. Also, you've all seen it before anyway.

I would use divs for my layout, but last time I tried to make one it took me hours to get it remotely right, since I didn't know the coding well. Tables are just so much easier and cause less of a problem for me. I mean, would you rather have me have a layout that takes slightly longer to load or one where the text moves off the layout and into other post?

You're layout looks alright to me, just that image at the bottom not working :/

I am surprised ANY image is working. But like I said in my edit above, it will all fix itself when my webhost allows me to modify my hotlinking settings to allow to this domain.

Tables aren't so much deprecated, but rather recommended for displaying tabular data and not for styling.

And the reason a lot of css/tableless layouts are messed up is because the people making them are making mistakes in their markup/stylesheet.

My only problem with that line of thought is that a simple style:

<div style="width: 100%; margin: 100px;">

...showed up differently in each "main" Windows browser (Opera, where it was correct; Firefox, where it was just badly wrong; and IE, where it was somewhat wrong.)

It's things like that that make me use tables.

I finally figured out how to get mine to work without tables, but IE's lack of CSS support (read: min-height, among other things) breaks it. I found a solution to that, though.

I also made my website XHTML 1.0 strict the other day just for the hell of it. No tables there either.

One thing that bugs me with this layout, though, is it takes up 100% of the post area height... until my avatar appears and makes the area bigger. For some reason it doesn't get re-rendered to fill the gap. I have no idea how to go about fixing that, though, short of putting something in my custom title to force the height.

height: 100% works in some cases but can cause the post content to spill onto other posts.

I haven't figured out what the table, inline-table, inline-block and run-in display properties would do in a post.

My layout doesn't use tables and it looks fine. Then again, it's also incredibly simple. I used to have a more advanced layout that I could only seem to get to work seemlessly using tables. It's hard to perfect a layout just using CSS unless it's incredibly simple.
