I don't know about you, but I'm particularly partial to "steely-eyed science guy," myself.

Of course, that's assuming that the "nerd" in question isn't necessarily synonymous with "geek," as geeks are generally defined as specialists, while nerds are more like experts in a particular technical discipline or profession, but that's ignoring the general "social misfit" definition that both are typically associated with, so mumble grumble rhubarb whatever...
