I'm not really sure what to call this, although it popped into my mind.

The particular issue I was thinking of was populations of cities/towns/villages. Many people would call a city of 20k, 50k, or even 100k a "small town", which I tend to find weird because I spent over half of my childhood in a village of 1000 or so people (in other words, smaller than I1). The largest city in the county was only around 2300 people, and the place where most people went shopping (Port Huron) only had 33k or so. So to me, "small town" has a much, well, smaller meaning than to the typical long-time city or suburb dweller.

Other examples (and I'm being generic here) might be, a part-time janitor would probably think $50k/year would be a huge amount, but an executive would probably be insulted and find it hard to scrape by with "only" $50k in a year.

Anyway, post any other examples of or experiences with differences in perspective here

I've always thought of my town as pretty small (about 20k people), and have always considered the adjacent suburb town to be quite huge (over 100k). And things to me seem to be far when on bike or on foot, but tend to be very close when I'm on some sort of transportation (of course).

Yeah, this gets annoying around here. People measure distance in minutes because they assume that everyone is using their own automobile on the freeway. Three minutes in a private car can easily be 10 minutes in a bus, 30 minutes on a bike, and 60 minutes on foot.

Because I live in the suburbs back home, I never really have considered myself as part of a town since there's no "town or city" elements at all. Yet whenever I fill something out, I've always got to put "City: Fairfax Station". Fairfax County has a massive amount of people though, mostly because it's the suburb of DC. Last I checked we have over 1 million people living there.

I always felt that about 6000 people or less was considered small for a town, considering that I've lived in mostly cities of between 40000 and 100000

I would consider about 500000 or larger to be a big city, though...

It could also depend on the state or other political entity and how it defines cities

Michigan allows many very small communities to be "cities", some under 500 people, but most US states would call them villages or something else. On the other end of the spectrum, Clinton Township (a suburb of Detroit) is unincorporated and is close to 100k people

Another thing could be board sizes. I considered Acmlm's Board (I1) to be large, but it was never nearly as big as Civilization Fanatics' Forums (the first board I discovered, IIRC). So someone from there would probably have found I1 to be small.

I always considered I1 to be pretty huge. It wasn't on Big Boards for no reason, was it?

There's also other things, such as board activity levels and connection speeds... a lot of people might be surprised at Jul's activity level at times while we consider it normal... and I think I've mentioned connection speeds enough over the last day.

Despite having a population of over 1.1 million people, Adelaide is considered a "small town" by other cities in Australia—in particular Melbourne and Sydney.

That said, picking on Adelaide is also a hobby and recurring joke for people in Melbourne and Sydney.

Quit picking on us or we'll murder you.

In New York, I believe the smallest city is barely 5000 people or so... but I don't know the exact population of it

There's some small cities in New York, namely Oneonta (only the college is there), Mechanicsville (used to be much bigger earlier in the 20th century), and Cobleskill (technically not a city, but I guess it can still count... it does have the college, though)

But then again, these cities would still be considered big in comparison to some cities in other states, some of which have only about 1000 people or even less...
