((Please note that this is just a short story that I wanted to write out. I had a day dream on this and I wanted to get it down on paper. I should have done this a long time ago since I get a lot of ideas just by dreaming them up.
I won’t be going into a lot of back story and character information with this story. Like I said, just something that I wanted to get typed out.
If you have questions, just ask.
As far as the time line is concerned, this takes place a few months before the events in the Jul Pub where it seems that Anya and Kyle are on bad terms. This short story is also before the events in Dark Moon, which is still on-going.
It is also after the events in the HSH thread, Rebirth arc, (which I’m still writing) Unreal Saga, and TJ’s Element.))
Standing on a long stretch of asphalt, Kyle reaches back and grips the hilt of his broadsword. His brown hair flies in the wind as he glares at his opponent. Next to him stands Victoria, the clone of Anya who appears to look the age of fourteen. She grips tightly onto her twin Sai. Not the type to actually fight, she feels intimidated just standing next to Kyle, knowing that he is well capable of dealing with this enemy on his own.
Standing several feet behind them are Celestria and Miles. One is a master healer and the other a defender and who keeps track of what is going on with his portable device. Both are not fighters, but if need be, Celestria has been practicing with a bow and arrow, which she has on her back today.
“Now, now, I’m not here to fight,” Ozma Vid calls out to the group of four. “I’m just the messenger today.
“We’re suppose to believe that?” Kyle shouts back.
Brushing her black hair from her eyes, Ozma answers with, “I honestly don’t care if you believe me or not, but I’m here with a message, nothing more.”
Meanwhile, Anya and Zar-Q are inside the command center in the castle that is based on the planet of Crystaltina. They are currently researching the current threat and trying to make sense of the situation.
“I don’t get it,” Anya says, spinning in her chair. “It’s been dead quiet for how many years and all of a sudden Ozma pops out of nowhere?”
“Maybe she thinks that we’ve all moved on,” Zar-Q answers back, scratching his light blue skin before continuing to type on the keyboard. “It has been almost five years after all.”
Anya stares at one of the several monitors in the room. This one displays the action that is going on between the four and Ozma. Normally Anya would take care of this matter herself, but Kyle and Celestria suggested that she stay hidden to find out what was going on, before rushing in. Perhaps Ozma and company thought that Anya had moved on to a normal life back on Earth, leaving the others to defend the worlds without her. This would give them a great element of surprise.
For the past five years, the group has been going back and forth between Crystaltina and Earth but still keeping an eye out for any suspicious activity. This was mainly done through the world wide web and their own technology.
“Something’s up, I know that for sure,” Anya says. “Turn it up, I want to hear this so called message that she has.”
“So,” Kyle says to Ozma, “What do you want to tell us?”
“Is this everyone? Such a small audience.”
“Get to the point, already,” Victoria shouts out, who is getting impatient.
“Is that any way to talk to the one who created you?” Ozma lets out a laugh.
Victoria grips her Sai even tighter and takes a step forward. Kyle lets go of the hilt and puts his right arm in front of Victoria.
“So eager to attack me? Reminds me of someone, but where is she?”
“Left, now stop stalling,” Kyle replies back.
“That’s a shame and I wanted her to be here to listen to what I have to say. After all, it is about you,” she smiles as her eyes lock onto Kyle’s.
Anya sits up in her chair, “What does she mean?”
“I have no clue, sorry,” Zar-Q slowly speaks. “What type of information could she have about Kyle that you don’t know about.”
Zar-Q had a point. Anya and Kyle first met back in 1994, the year that changed everything for her. They’ve been together as friends for this entire time and usually by each others side for the duration. Was there something that Kyle was keeping to himself for this long and if so, why is it so important for Ozma to share?
“I have a bad feeling about this,” Anya says, almost as a whisper.
“All this time,” Ozma begins, “we’ve been trying to find ways to stop all of you. Each of you have a weakness that we’ve been able to discover over the years. We’ve also learned that some are harder to break than others. It seems one of the two simply quit, while leaving you here to help save everyone. So we started to dig deeper to find what make’s you, Kyle, tick and how to stop it. We looked everywhere and dug up almost everything and anything that we could find out on anyone who had connections to yourself and to Anya. You would be shocked to see all of the resources that we have over at Anzak Industries. It took us some time, but we finally found what we were looking for.”
No one says a word or moves during her speech.
“You are a hard one to crack, Mr. Roberts. You see, attacking you with spells against your own element would work to an extent. But, what we need to truly break you, is the truth.”
“Truth?” Anya and Zar-Q both say at the same time.
There is a slight flicker on the monitor.
“You, Kyle Dryden Roberts, was once an entity living on another plane of existence. You were given the task to follow another entity known as Saturn. Said entity fused with a baby child in the mid 1200’s, which is against the rules, is it not? Entities are not allowed to fuse with another creature unless given permission to do so. They are also not allowed to fully take over the host. Saturn broke this rule yet no punishment was taken. You waited several years before you decided to fuse. Could this have been because you wanted to see if Saturn would have been punished for taking over a host? Maybe you were reluctant to fuse, knowing that you wouldn’t be fully in control. But that wasn’t the case for you, was it? You found a young boy who was ill. You knew that he didn’t have much time left, so you decided to fuse with him, in hopes of healing his body before his soul died and moved on. In doing so, you accelerated his passing. Oh, but you were able to have his body and take it as your own. Some would say that to be cruel, but you figured if he was dying anyway, why not, right?”
Kyle, frozen in place is unable to speak, the same goes for everyone else. He could feel the eyes of his friends on him. His heart racing and his mind trying to figure how Ozma got this information.
“Oh, I’m not done yet,” Ozma grins.
“There’s more?” Kyle thought to himself. What else did she have on him?
“This is the best part, you see, you were there that night. That night when Saturn fully took over Anya’s body and started to kill those closest to her. You were there and saw everything.”
“……….”
“Instead of helping her out, you ran. You had a mission to do and you ran from it. In an event where Saturn would take over a host and begin to manifest, your mission was to destroy Saturn. But you couldn’t do it, could you? And you know what would have happened if you did what you were suppose to do, right? Nothing would have happened. All the pain that was caused to so many people that you came across would have never happened. You could have stopped everything from happening. So many lives have been ruined because you ran from your own destiny.”
“……”
Everything? If by everything, does she mean that Anya would have never been awoken in this time period? That Miles might have been able to live with his mother and to go to college ? Celestria would have gone on to medical school. Hiryuu would have never been split, creating Rain and Anya never cloned creating Victoria? All the adventures, chaos, good and bad times that had happened would have never happened?
Laughing, Ozma adds to the blow, “You know what’s really funny about the whole thing? You could have stopped Saturn and there would still have been a chance that Anya would have been reincarnated and maybe she would have been able to lead a normal life, like everyone else could have done.”
There is a slight flicker, but the four are unable to notice it due to the words that came from Ozma‘s mouth. Kyle’s arm slowly drops back to his side, still unable to move or talk.
Anya and Zar-Q are still staring at the screen, when a third flicker happens.
Anya shakes her head, still in shock, but says, “Did you…see that?”
“Yea, I heard it.”
“No, no, see. Did you see that?”
“Huh? See what?”
“A flicker. The screen flickered. Like a jump in the picture, but these are the best computer monitors, they just don’t flicker like that.”
Zar-Q squints at the screen, waiting for any odd movements.
A fourth flicker. This time a rumble can be heard in the distance moments afterward.
“I--I saw something. Maybe it’s just a hiccup in the system,” Zar-Q says, even though he doubts his own words.
“No way. These systems never hiccup.”
A fifth.
Then another.
“It’s a distraction!” Anya jumps out of her seat and is about to teleport.
“Wait, you can’t go running in there. Let me go, I can get readings and send them back to you. If it is a trap, the last thing we need is for you to get stuck in it,” Zar-Q says, standing.
“Readings…wait, if something was going on, why aren’t we getting readings from Miles?”
They both slowly look back at the computer monitor. It still shows the four standing facing Ozma outside on a street. It’s bright and sunny out, a clear sky.
“I’m going before we lose our chance to find out what’s going on,” Zar-Q says, grabbing a small bottle from the desk. He throws it to the ground and a small portal appears.
“Five minutes and I’m coming in after you guys.”
“I know,” he takes a deep breath and jumps into the portal sends him to Kyle’s location.
Anya turns back to the screen and watches as Zar-Q teleports in.
“Of course, you guys monitor everything these days. Did you enjoy what you heard?” Ozma mocks. She turns back to Kyle. “Anything to say?”
“……….”
“Hmmm easier than I thought it would be.” She takes out a small device from her coat pocket. Taking her left hand to her ear she says, “We’re ready to start the test. We should have little resistance.”
Meanwhile, Zar-Q takes out a device of his own and presses a button to start a scan. Minutes after, Ozma presses the button on her own device. At first nothing happens. Ozma looks over the device. An instant later, the area around them begins to flicker in and out. If the four hadn’t been distracted by Ozma’s words, they might have been able to detect this and stop it from happening. During Ozma’s monologue, the hand held computer in Miles’ pocket was beeping off a warning.
Not waiting for the five minutes to be up, Anya teleports. Since she is teleporting from a farther distance, Anya has to teleport in and out of space and time before she can reach her destination. Seconds after teleporting from the castle, Anya stands on the every street that her friends once stood.
Looking around, Anya’s face is that of confusion. It wasn’t possible for everyone to vanish that quickly. Anya shakes her head as it begins to throb slightly. Her eyes begin to hurt as well. She squints them and swears that she can see something. Or someone for that matter. She takes out a pair of sliver and red sunglasses from her personal void and puts them on. These glasses are outfitted to detect any anomalies and even scan power levels of enemies and friends alike. Anya’s head begins to hurt more as she tries to scan the area. The glasses seem to pick up something that isn’t there, but is. Anya knew that she had to deal with the throbbing headache in order to focus on what was actually there. It took her several minutes, and a slight nose bleed, but eventually, she was able to make out the area.
The scene in front of her was that of a faded one. Two realities mixed together, one unfocused like a camera lens and the other perfectly fine. Anya wipes the blood away and turns 360, trying to understand the situation. She could see her friends trapped in what looked like glass prisons. All but Kyle and herself were free. Wait, herself? She wasn’t standing, but on the ground, not moving. Kyle was inches from the body, looking straight at Anya. She wasn’t sure if he could actually see her or not.
The, Ozma spoke behind Anya, “All this time, and you couldn’t even protect her. Do you see how much holding back the truth has hurt everyone..”
Through the eyes of Kyle, the scene was clear to him and the others. Inches from him lay the fallen body of Anya, who was killed by the person standing in front of him. Instead of seeing the true nature of things, standing in front of Kyle is their long time nemesis, Saturn. When in true reality Anya is the one in front of him. Kyle, who is still in possession of his sword, slowly draws it out and begins to walk towards Anya.
From Anya’s point of view, it seems that he is walking towards Ozma. Anya can see Kyle’s tight grip on his sword as he readies it for a strike. Anya slowly turns her head and notices that Ozma is too far away from Kyle to strike, unless he was going to rush in. Then, it dawned on her, and as if moving in slow motion, Anya turns her head back to face Kyle, just as he thrusts the sword into her chest.
The surroundings for Anya began to flicker in and out, making her head hurt even more. Blood started to pour from her chest and nose, but she had to wake Kyle up. Focusing the rest of her energy, she tries to reach Kyle.
Ozma smirks and turns to leave, satisfied that their test run was a successes. Her bosses would be please to know that things are going along fine. It wouldn’t be too long before they would be able to test on a larger scale.
As soon as Ozma left, there was a powerful wave and the scene returned to that of a normal street. The sword, however, was still lodged into Anya’s chest.
Kyle shakes his head and quickly focuses on the sword in Anya’s chest. He stands there, unable to move or speak.
Celestria rushes over, along with the rest of the group. “Don’t move,” she says, as she begins to chant a spell.
“How did this happen?” Zar-Q asks. “We were in a dungeon for so long, how did we end up--”
“Please, I need to concentrate, we can discuss what happened later,” Celestria says. “Kyle, I need you to pull the sword out slowly.”
By now, Anya’s head had slumped over.
Kyle started to pull the sword out, as Celestria worked her healing magic on Anya. As soon as the sword was out, Anya’s body falls back, who is caught by Miles. There is a peaceful green glow on Anya’s chest as Celestria works hard to heal her. Within minutes, Anya’s eyes begin to open and her wound healed.
She looks up at Kyle, “Is it true?”
It wasn’t so much the sword that hurt her, but the fact that Kyle would keep something from her for so many years. She needed to know if it was true or not. She stands on her feet, keeping her eyes fixed on Kyle’s.
“Yes.”
Anya had a feeling that it was, but as soon as she heard the reply, her heart felt heavy. She turns to leave. “We need to discuss what happened today, lets head back home.” Anya opens up a portal to take the group to their destination.
No words are spoken as the group walks through the portal. Celestria and Kyle are the only two that remain. She turns to see Kyle walking in the opposite direction of the portal, with his head down. Celestria looks at the ground, unable to think of anything to say, and then turns and enters the portal.
Several hours later, the group, minus Kyle, are sitting at a round table in the castle. There are books and papers all over the place, along with cups of water.
“From what I’ve gathered from Miles’ device, Ozma and company were running a test on shifting realities and illisuons. What felt like months in that dungeon, was actually around fifteen minutes. This was just a small scale test, but if they’re able to do this on a global or even universal scale, we could be in a world of trouble,” Zar-Q explains.
“I wonder why they would just let us go like that? Don’t they know that we’ll come after them?” Victoria wonders.
“Their device isn’t perfect yet and I think they wanted to give us a little warning before going full scale,” Anya says. “Of course a little warning has never stopped us, right? I want everyone to start looking into reality shifts, both magical and scientific. I also think we may need to start recruiting again. Or even call in a few favors to some of our old friends.”
“What did you have in mind?” Celestria asks.
“For one, I think we may need someone who is good with illusion magic. I don’t think our man-made potions are going to do the trick here,” Anya answers back. “For right now, take a breather guys and we’ll start fresh in the morning.”
The group departs, leaving Celestria and Anya at the table.
Celestria is the first to speak up, “Do you want to talk about it?”
“No.”
Celestria stands, “When you’re ready, I’ll be here, okay?”
Celestria leaves the room, as Anya stands and walks to the window, who is at a complete loss of what to do next.
