| EDIT: The article I linked disappeared. But imagine it's still there and a very interesting read. It's a pandemic now! I was about to say that the news always forgets to mention that swine flu is not a particularly dangerous disease, but the article I just linked does in fact say so. Swine flu symptoms are similar that to your plain vanilla influenza, but they're generally very mild and go away after a week or so without any medical attention whatsoever. Most people who get it won't even know it. Having said that, there have been severe cases and a number of deaths from the virus. It's important to stress that the young, the elderly, pregnant women and those with existing medical conditions are more at risk of having severe symptoms from swine flu. Then again, this is true of any illness. My main interest in the whole swine flu business is the politics. When I first heard about some mutated pig virus killing off the Mexicans, I thought "Hmmm, maybe I should look into this so I know what we're up against," and found that the common cold is usually more severe. But the news continues to say that it's the most terrible thing since Hitler... What's going on, I wondered. Turns out that the fact it's a "new" disease is what has people up in arms. Governments are so caught up in preventing and/or containing the outbreak that they go through such extreme measures--measures that, in the end, have shown to be ineffective. But they're so interested in keeping this new illness at bay that they completely overlook the fact that existing diseases that the general public is exposed to every year are far more dangerous and people still manage to make it through the season alive. Aaaaanyways, that's just my 2¢. I had a few extra, and this rounds it out to a dollar for me to take to the bank and exchange for a coin. *Rimshot* |
