Eh, Every once or twice in a while I'll go play it.
As far as flaws go, Only ones that really irk me would be the lack of features that really should have been in there, like being able to exchange FCs after a OL match, or having the red koopa shell appear in a match.
Oh, and the theme song remixes population count being >9000. Argh.

My newest beef with the music is that they included instrumental versions of His World and Snake Eater instead of the much better much cooler versions with lyrics. Makes no sense. Instead we got Seven Rings in Hand, in which you can't hear what the hell they're saying. It's like listening to it through a blender.

It's not too hard to hit a point were practicing in Brawl more isn't going to help you more. That point of skill was a lot higher in Melee.


Except the game isn't even close to a year old competitively. Most games, unless they're horrendously broken don't hit the peak of the metagame where it stops actually evolving for a couple of years. And watching the competitive community of smash, the metagame is still improving and those practising are getting better than those who aren't.

Secondly, L cancelling does not actually improve the game anymore than halving lag across the board - there's no tactical improvements, just a technical one.

You always want to L-cancel because it's always an advantage. It does nothing to actually deepen the game and anyone with skill *will* hit that L-cancel every time because they've spent the pointless dozens of hours training their muscle memory to hit it perfectly. At high levels of play there is no tactical difference between L-cancelling and halving all the landing lag from all aerials.

As for hitstun, Brawl already has issues with infinite/0-death combos. Increasing hitstun would only make this exponentially worse. Or more like SSB64, I guess. You'd have to massively mutilate every character's moveset to make noticeably increased hitstun remotely playable.

The limited airdodge is actually interesting because it gives tactical options and there are times when using it is detrimental. Wavedash is silly because it replaces several sub-optimal forms of movement with one optimal form of movement. I guess the only saving grace of it is that it allows you to actually perform more moves in any given situation.

My issue with the music is that it's basically twenty seven variations of the fucking Brawl theme.

I am so sick of that song it isn't funny.

Out of curiosity, I did a count, and the actual count is 24, making it 8% of the games soundtrack. Of course, given that you pretty much have to listen to it every time you go to any sort of special menu or start up an online match or anything other than basic multiplayer, then I guess you could argue it pretty much makes up a third of everything you hear or more, depending on how you play. I can see how it could get on people's nerves.


I'm glad that I like the song.



On the subject of music, I'm amazed at how many of my favorite songs from the games made it in. Favorite F-Zero GX song? Planet Colors, second being Shotgun Kiss. Favorite Mario Kart DS song? Waluigi Pinball. Only song I like in Yoshi's Island DS? Wildlands.

It's not and really isn't designed for it. But damnit, if people want to make it something it's not they should at least make it it something it's not properly!


I suppose you've got a point there. But it was one more technical move to give players. Removing it seems silly.

By that argument you could also say that by making the ability to jump now require a 3-button keypress combo you're giving the game one more techincal move.

Technical moves are the player vs the game. Strategic moves are the player vs player. L-Cancelling made the player better against the game, but not necessarily better against the player.


This is where we disagree, it seems. Most of the zero-death combos are grab related, yes? That's just poor play testing and balancing than anything else. For example, making DK's recovery after being grabbed take so long is stupid. If they cut that, but extended hit stun otherwise (Like the so called Brawl+ codes have done,) I think it would/will make the game more interesting.

Many of the 0-D are indeed grab related. But if you look at SSB64 compared to SSBM, you'll notice the massive hitstun cut - SSB64 has massive amounts of 0-D combos and it basically is who can 0-D first. Melee is a lot better in that regard.

But the fact of the matter is, they have a low stun time, even after grabs and you've got 0-D problems. What about other things like Falco's laser lock and the like - they'll only get worse if you increase hitstun.


Also, randomly. Captain Falcon blows in Brawl. Seriously.

My two mains got nerfed out of existence from Melee to Brawl. You don't see me complaining about that.

Well, consider a typical netplay match:

- upwards of 50 seconds listening to various renditions of it between games
- 3 minutes of game (or, heaven forbid, another rendition of it)

That right there is about 25%, and that isn't even including the (sometimes horrible) time it takes to actually get online with netplay.

I'll agree that the main theme while nice was used too much. However, since I rarely use modes other than Brawl, I only hear the renditions that I actually like, including the menu theme, Battlefield 1 & 2, and Final Destination. So to me, it's not that bad.

It honest-to-god surprises me every time I see one of these meta-game discussions pop up about Brawl.

I just don't get how people can get so engrossed in that game that it turns into a huge orgy of bugs, glitches, and random "techniques" that MUST BE USED to even have a chance. Bleugh.
