In an old staff interview from shortly after the game's release, Super Metroid composer Kenji Yamamoto explained that for an earlier version of the game he had recorded co-composer Minako Hamako screaming into a mic to use as Samus' death cry, but the sound effect was discarded when it was deemed too 'sexual' sounding.
I wondered if there might be something of less this sample in the finished game, so I used SNESSOR to rip all 169 sounds from game, which you can listen to here: https://mega.nz/#F!ZAgkWSJC!ai2LjXsPgDCYJeNA0dJAZw I wasn't able to find the aforementioned sexy Samus moan, but I did find two very odd sound effects that don't seem to belong to anything in the game, that hopefully somebody who is a little more familiar with the inner workings of Super Metroid might be able to identify: https://mega.nz/#!Rch0kYxI!RcUWh0fghaZety9u9EVyPLQwKnrnPKruLeijNYBTYLo The first one sounds like a man grunting in reaction to being hit by something -- in fact, it sounds like something straight out of Street Fighter. https://mega.nz/#!xJhSiSCS!2oGcankDcSUTLoQXsVmYgMpyKVUCOLLj7d3tFOx1tpA And the second is a woman going "Ooh!". The sample seems to have been slowed down (that or SNESSOR ripped it wrong), and if you speed/pitch it up about 10% it sounds normal. Could this be related to Minako Hamano's Samus voice sample? Who knows. I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than me about ROM hacking can shed some light on these two sounds, or at least give an educated guess. |
