Soooo, we've been having a bunch of HDMI drop-outs lately. My husband thought it was the HDMI cable, so he's replaced it, but the problem still exists.

I think the problem's actually caused by interference and cable stress, due to the rat's nest of wires he's set up behind the entertainment console.

Avert your eyes, children!



I'm thinking we need to tidy that shit up. My husband insists that we actually need that many cables back there, but he also insists that it's not possible to tidy it up in any way. I am positive he is fucking wrong as shit.

So, folks, how would you go about cleaning up this… fuckery? What do I need to get? Zip ties? I can get zip ties. Or what would you use??

Do you have nice tidy cables with your computers and AV equipment? Is it just as bad as this? Worse???

1. identify what a cable actually does. use a label maker or something to indicate what it's for (e.g. "pc/tv hdmi").
2. when you've identified it, remove it from the mess. unplug whatever it is, remove it form the disaster, set it aside.
3. repeat until you are out of wires.

once you've done that:

4. find cables that go to the same things or are close. e.g. "pc/tv hdmi", "pc/tv audio"
5. plug those cables in
6. wrap them in something like this -- velcro cable ties
7. if dealing with lone cables, you can velcro-tie them to a post or support to keep them out of the way


Don't use regular zip ties unless you don't have another option because they're a lot harder to deal with if you ever want to update or move anything.


You can also group cables that are on the same path. If you have 5 power cords and one needs to go to the other side of a cabinet, but other ones need to go different places, you can always keep them together until they need to diverge:

Husband got some velcro cable ties, and tidied shit up. Now we are forced to confront the awful reality that the problem's either the Apple TV or (much worse) the receiver…

Once we figure out the problem I will. It’s all a bit messy while we try to figure out if it’s the Apple TV or the Denon receiver that’s shat itself.

He’s also messed it up again, btw, by adding a VCR, a capture device, and a whole bunch of other shit, so he can make an authentic VCR filter. There’s no more authentic than actually recording to VCR and then capturing it…

be prepared to set aside basically an entire day, I spent nearly 6 hours putting this together months ago:

try to stay away from adhesives if you can, especially if the room they're in tends to get real hot.

edit: fixed up the wiring because of some anxiety i've been feeling due to current events back home (northern california sonoma/napa fires if you're curious) and it's the nicest it's looked in weeks:
