I posted about this on HG101 and they reminded me that you guys might find it interesting. Hopefully this is the correct place for it.

I borrowed the Perfect Dark Dual CD Soundtrack from my local library, but the second disc doesn't work as intended. It won't play music in a stereo and foobar2k won't read it. Instead, Windows opens it as a data disc. This is what it displays in the root directory:

Perfect Dark Soundtrack files

And this is what's inside the exegcc folder:

Perfect Dark soundtrack files 2

This isn't music. Creating an ISO of the disc is only 74MB; there's no audio on this CD. install.txt tells us that os20l_eng.exe is an installer for Nintendo 64 OS2.0L, which appears to be development software from the N64 era. exegcc is a tool from Kyoto Microcomputers Co., Ltd., who partnered with Nintendo in 1996 to develop their SDK.

I've done some searching, but I can't find anybody online who's ever observed this in their copy of the OST. One VGMdb user replied with evidence that theirs was working as intended. Some mutual friends reached out to Grant Kirkhope and Graeme Norgate, but neither of them could explain it, nor would I expect them to be involved at that stage of production.

What are you guys' thoughts on this? I'm quite interested in finding out more and learning how this kind of mistake could have occurred - and in such small numbers, at that.

... what the frig?

Did you compare physical scans of the artwork to the ones on VGMdb, if any? Maybe there's an easily identifiable misprint version with this.

Well, that's one way to leak a devkit.

I have, and it looks identical to me. The quality of the CD art - glossy and slightly embossed - is professional grade, so I don't suspect a bootleg. I don't see any obvious differences in the front or back covers either, though I could try to scan it in if you want. This release has no catalog number either, so there are no identifying marks to contrast with a standard copy.

Looks like that's part of the same N64 kit mentioned in this thread...

Small runs of mispressed music CDs have definitely happened many times over the years - here's just one of several that Discogs lists. Given the OST was manufactured/published by Nintendo, it's probably the same scenario - i.e. someone just got sloppy when pressing the discs and used the wrong master by mistake. It probably just as likely could have been swapped with any other CD that Nintendo had been pressing at the time.

It makes sense that it would have come about from using the wrong master, but that kind of production happens in batches. I'd expect more instances of this to be out there, even if they caught it before they all went out.

Not that I'm complaining, but why the sticky? I didn't think this would get much attention.

Probably to show how one can come across developer material in the most unusual ways possible and how easily this sort of thing can be overlooked. That stuff made it onto a publicly released disk by accident is something quite unusual, especially considering this is Nintendo, who only let these kits go out to approved developers.

After all, there are bits of source code included by accident in many games. We are missing loads of instances of this though, especially on newer console and computer games. And there are instances in games where people have found developer materials, such as Pikmin and Bloody Roar 4.

Hi Nat,

I'm Reviving your old thread here....
I was actually just looking for a copy of this disc, and found your post.

Do you know of a way you could somehow forward me a link to the .ISO of this disc?
Not sure if that will work... was the image very large?

Let me know when you get a chance.
Cheers!

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
