In a few months I'm gonna have to move, and I'm looking at Vancouver as a destination. I'm sick of living in small towns all my life (currently middle of nowhere, Alberta) and I think I'd like to live in a city, and this seems like a nice place. But I don't know a lot about it. Anyone live(d) there, have any comments? How much things cost, what are good places to be, etc?

I hope to get a job in programming or some such (going to look at them online before I go), so I'd want to live somewhere nearby such places, not way off on the islands where it'd take an hour to commute to work. (I don't have nor plan to get a car, either.) But those places are probably more expensive, too...

Note to self; if moving to Toronto or Vancouver, don't EVER try for a house/etc. in the main city itself. The surrounding areas are where it's at.

What Shadic said. (Downtown) Vancouver is one of the most expensive places to live in the country, and if you get a home in one of the outlying communities like everyone else, you'll have to contend with the commute.

On the bright side, there are a few Jul folks inside of a couple hours from you .

In terms of knowledge, I live about an hour to hour-and-a-half from there by Ferry, and I've been a few times. Hit me up on IRC if you want to talk about it more.

Well, how long of a commute? I'm imagining if a ferry is involved it's going to be expensive and only run a couple times a day. Or are they more like buses? If I even need to take one.

An apartment here is ~$650 for one bedroom, so I'd be looking at similar there. I could live with a small bachelor apartment for a while until I can afford something better, if I need to.

And yes, a big part of why I want to move to a large city is to meet people and maybe have some hope of actually making friends. Especially if there are a lot of social events and such... here, there's really not much to do but go to bars, and I hate bars.

Apparently, Vancouver is the most expensive city in the country to live in.

Something about foreign people buying property at outrageous prices, IIRC.

I'd say move out here to Langley, as it's cheaper than living in Vancouver, but on the other hand, it's an hour's commute or more away. Might be worth it if you can carpool with people to get in the HOV lane on the freeway.

Also, a two bedroom basement suite here costs a little under a thousand dollars per month including utilities. I suppose a mediocre one-bedroom apartment would be less than that, but not a whole lot.

Well one bedroom was more than enough for me before, so. (hell, I'm basically living in a storage room right now) I'm mainly concerned about expenses - food, rent, utilities, etc. Whether utilities come with the apartment, that kind of thing.

Here, rent isn't too bad, but food is horribly expensive, and there's only one ISP so of course they wring you as well. I'm hoping closer to a big city those would be less problematic.

Then I still need to figure too, how I actually arrange moving anywhere. Do I take a bus trip down there to look at apartments before picking one (which only gives me about a day to look at them, unless I want to pay for a hotel) or just pick one based on online/phone ads? A job, I can probably arrange online (maybe even transfer my current one as a bootstrap), but living space is another thing entirely.

And then even if Vancouver is too expensive, I'll have the same issues elsewhere... sure as hell not staying here. I dunno where else though, either...

Ferry commute is two hours, at best. Which if you're unlucky enough to get caught in rush hour traffic, is about the same as Richmond, Delta, etc. anyways.

And if you live on the other side of the ferries, you're within a stone's throw of me.. yeah, stick to the mainland.

The other place worth considering is Victoria. It's on the Island, but being the capital there're some good jobs.

Nanaimo is farther up the island, and while it's not exactly flush with jobs, it's decent; there's foot travel to Vancouver via the ferries, Shaw has great download speeds and acceptable upload and a growing FTTN rollout (FTTH is apparently on the horizon) in there. Nanaimo's the shipping hub for the island, so it's a pretty easy place to get to/from.
