I was doing some grocery shopping with my brother a while ago, and it was our turn to have our stuff scanned.

The clerk scanning our groceries started up some friendly small talk with us, "hey, how're you doing today?" kind of stuff. My brother responds with some kind of "not too bad, how about you [name on nametag]?", and it just carries on a little bit.

However, I really had to think about this situation: My brother is likely some complete stranger to this clerk, and he just referred to him by his name, which is on a nametag that he's required to wear.

The clerk was perfectly fine with it, but I'd have to imagine that it gets really old when complete strangers refer to you by your nametag.

Does it?

I usually tend to forget my nametag's on when someone I don't know calls me by my name.

Then I feel really awkward that I don't know theirs. Otherwise, it doesn't bother me much.

I hate it. I'm like, "you don't know me" or "who the hell are you and why are you using my name". I feel awkward when people that I don't know use my name because they see it on my name tag.

Also, since I work in a casino, it also has where we're born on the badge, so people are like "so you're actually from Florida" and I'm like .

I try to avoid wearing name tags.

If a person doesn't ask my name, they don't have the right to know. It feels impersonal, and I can't make that connection I need to to be comfortable around them.

Wearing name tags on the first day of middle school killed me. Let alone in real world application.

I personally keeps mine off, reason being people with snotty attitudes like to cause problems for me real fast and I don't want them to remember my name if they see me elswhere.

Wow, you people are pretty ridiculous about this stuff. I honestly wouldn't give a shit if they're making small talk. Just say you;re doing fine and be done with it, rather than automatically being a victim.

Yeah, I'm with paulguy on this one. Smalltalk is smalltalk. It's just ritual and it sometimes it involves using names. If I'm going to address someone, I at least try to gauge how cool they are beforehand. A guy who doesn't smile at you and obviously can't wait to go back to reading a newspaper probably wouldn't find this "intimacy" amusing.

I like having a name tag at work. That way, I can point to it when someone asks my name and they'll realize it's Taryn and not Karen or Tara or whatever

To be honest, I don't really mind people using my real name IRL. It's just fine. That's what my name is for--if I need a nametag to get the point across, whatever. It beats being called "That guy" or "whoever that is" or "weird mustache man."

On the other hand, my real name doesn't belong on the internet. :p

For a few months two classmates I hanged with were "you" and "you too" or similar pronouns because we didn't know each other's names and nobody felt like asking. Not like it was a problem.

I only really ever got it once or twice at my job, which was fine by me, cause it's disconcerting as hell until you realize how a random stranger knows your name.

Also oh god Reshiram I just noticed the face on your layout.

Yeah, small talk is just that. Some people are just friendly and they try to use people's names, I don't really see it being that out of line. I don't do it myself, personally, but I know people who do and that's just part of their personality--especially in instances when you're at say, a restaurant and the waiter outright introduces themselves by name at the start of the service.

As someone who has had nearly 6 years of experience in the customer service industry, the majority of which was as a tour guide, I can say that I am not bothered by it much. Granted at the places where I worked we could have our last names on our badges i.e. Mr. Smith instead of our first names. Either way people were nice about it. I have never had a problem with angry customers because I have always had a way with people (especially when talking about history). I actually got an award from the former Secretary of Veteran Affairs, Edward Shinseki, for taking his group on my special tour of Mount Vernon. It is a very nice resume builder

I wear a nametag were I work as well. It's optional most of the time so I can choose not to wear if it I like. I actually like when people read my name off the tag. It means they are willing to call me by my name rather than in 3rd person. However at this point most of the people I work with are other staff members who know my name by now.

Online I don't know of anyone who calls me by my real name. Even people I know IRL use "Emuz" My real name isn't a secret anymore so I don't even bother hiding it. :/

There's this guy at my job who, several months ago, didn't want to wear his name tag because he didn't like things hanging around his neck, or some such.

I made him wear it anyway.

When there is that one customer that really gets on my nerves, I usually take my nametag off so they dont know my name in case they want to lodge a complaint.

Uhh umm my name is uh Tom.

You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
