Not sure any of this stuff is worth posting on the Wiki, so I'll toss it here.

In the US ROM, there's one graphic compressed in the Nemesis format (according to the Nemesis searcher, anyway), which doesn't appear in the Japanese ROM. It appears to be a SEGA logo... I'm not sure if this is used or not, it doesn't look like the SEGA logo used in-game but maybe I'm missing something.

(Naturally the palette is due to YY-CHR)

EDIT: No, wait, this is the same as the title screen. derp. (But it doesn't explain why it's apparently compressed differently in the US version)

Even less interesting, there's some (but not all) katakana left over in the text in the US ROM. (Japanese version for comparison), and the "Generations of Doom" script is uncompressed in the US ROM while it is (apparently) compressed in the Japanese. (Not sure what that yen sign is for, either) The offsets are quite different, however, which might imply more substantial regional differences?

It's an ASCII character set, and the Japanese version has the yen symbol in place of the backslash. Nothing special, really.

I've been familiar with the old Yen symbol/slash 'issue' since my DOS days, but I don't think this is it.

Though, it does match up with ASCII fairly well... (exactly well, even) would it be that outlandish that they use a Japanese ASCII set for their font? (Is this font used in any other Genesis games of the period? I haven't seen it anywhere else, but it's not like it's a very game-specific one)

Yeah, it does. It wouldn't surprise me if someone at Sega Japan just copied a Japanese font (the 'relevant' parts, anyway) from a devkit or something over the character set in preparation for SOA's localization team.

(Edit: Or, given the timeframe, they could've just been using (modified?) Japanese devkits, anyway, and copied in the font as a quick-and-dirty solution. Maybe we should check the charset tiles for other games around the same period, to see if they did the same thing.)

This is my attempt at reassembling the Kara graphics, but something looks off about it so I'm not sure about posting it on the article. (The palette is wholly fictional but based roughly off of her portrait)

I'm not sure what's with her outfit.

She got taller!

I raised her shoulders and head up by one tile and fit the remaining pieces in as best I could. It looks like her shoulder and chest tiles were supposed to be mirrored and reused on the right side (were they short on VRAM space?), unless you missed some in the ROM.

Bah, why did I notice that... I think that mirroring is used in the game on occasion, so that's probably accurate.
