An awesome dude named Chris Covell recently found and scanned an old Japanese picture book about the people and processes behind the Famicom and its games. The book focused heavily on SMB3, and as such featured a number of screenshots from the game, two of which were from the prototype version!



As is the norm with SMB3 proto shots, the status bar says "MARIO" instead of "WORLD". It also features transparent bonus cards and (possibly) a darker blue palette. AFAIK, no level in the final version featured both clouds (large AND small!) and item silhouettes at the same altitude.



World 4's boss room. Note the windows in the background and the missing walls on either side of the room. The walls may have been a last-minute addition, judging from the fact that they were rather lazily slapped over the top of the old room layout (the two log objects on the far right side of the screen are still hidden underneath the wall).
