This is a new level I have made.

The Fire Brothers have invaded Mushroom Kingdom, and they have burnt everything. But they didn't have enough. They occupied Mario and Peach's castle! Mario was very angry, so he decided to recover it.

After, Mario did it, but when he got to the flagpole, he was so used to lifting his cap and run into that castle that he didn't realize that this time there was a hole (made by the Fire Brothers as a trap) and he fell to the lava and died. Poor mario!

Download here: http://www.fileqube.com/shared/XSxiqGRzg1504019
there are two NML files. Import them into a NSMB rom with the NSMBEditor4 into 1-1 areas 1,2 respectively.

my level ends at the flagpole.
I still don't know exactly why does the level end and come back to the world map, because as you say, if there's no castle Mario keeps walking and doesn't stop. but I don't know why, if you put a hole, it sometimes finishes and sometimes not, depending of the hole. I just moved it around until it finished.

Posted on 08-17-09 05:20:22 PM, in I suggest creating a wiki to organize all the info here Link
I think that creating a wiki to organize everythink that has been figured out of NSMB level format. we could create a page for each sprite, for each block explaining it, with pictures and examples, and some pages explaining the level format, how to hack other things such as music, textures etc... and some confusing things such as activators etc...

It would be easier to know how a sprite works, you would just search for the sprite name or number, instead of looking into the big threads for the info.

I have created a free wiki here: http://nsmbhacking.wikidot.com/ you're welcome to register and edit pages. I still don't know very well how to use it, i will figure it out.

if you like the idea, please help me to put everything there, well organised!

ok.

now it's editable.

Please read the guide on how to name the pages and write things, so everything is in the same format.

I am making a script that will upload all the sprites we have listed here automatically (rather than manually creating a page for each sprite). Please don't create any pages for sprites yet, because the script will overwrite them all...

when i finish it and they are all uploaded, i will tell you

of course not! it's only that i think that in this forum if you look for one sprite's data, it's not very organised. you have to go through the big thread and search for the sprite number for all the times it is mentioned (which may be a lot, in different pages...) In the wiki, you could go to the sprite's page and you have everything that is known of that sprite instantly.

good news! the script is working and uploading all the sprite data from Treeki's big post. Not the others, because everybody posted it in a different format so it was hard to make a script
we'll have to make them by hand

very cool levels! this is like a new mario game! please make more!
I see you have remade also 2-1. you could make more worlds! it would make an entire new mario!

there are some things that can improve, though in level 1-2:
-Fix the camera! I think you can fix it by simply removing the scroll controls
-The two pipes
- Some times the floor goes down below the screen so you can't see it and you have to jump blind

and also i think that the ppfomatic is doing weird things, because your download is VERY large. It'd be better to attach a zip with all the nml's.

Good work! waiting for more!

I don't have control over the wiki. A wiki is a site that anyone can register and edit pages.

Of course not! this forum is very useful to ask things, put the levels you made... The wiki is only as a reference to the sprite data and all those things.

with the "two pipes" i meant that there were two pipes to the secret exit. Maybe you have fixed it now and I didn't see it, because i downloaded it some time ago. i didn't feel like downloadoing again your 19 mbs to see if you fixed it

but, seriously, i think that 19 mbs is too much. for me it's slow to download. Maybe NSMBEd moves other files to save the new level into the nitrofs and the ppf thinks that the moved files have changed and includes them all. in that case be careful because the ppf may contain copyrighted nintendo things

it would be cool that nsmbed includes a "import all" feature. You select all the nmls and it imports them in the right slot atuomatically (the nmls remember which level are they from)

I don't know. it's true that he hasnt made any update lately. it's a pity because we know lots of things of the format that are still unimplemented. i think its not that hard to implement them... If treeki has "got sick" of it and he won't make any more updates he should give out the source code...

hmm... I think you could release it under a license that doesnt allow derivated works (people editing your editor and making his own version), for example Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works.
but I think you should really publish it. there are people with programming skills that could help you a lot. Me, for example. I would like a lot to help you People could send you their new parts, and you could put them together and post the new version.

hope you like the idea.

EDIT: But i don't think that would be a problem. It's better for people to collaborate with you editor than having their version, not well supported. There are lots of open-source projects, and that isn't a problem. Sincerely, I think that the benefits of releasing the source (collaboration, more bug fixes, etc) are far more than inconvenients

Another EDIT: Good news for the wiki: i've made a cool mario theme for it, and have documented some sprites, for example:
http://nsmbhacking.wikidot.com/sprites:91
http://nsmbhacking.wikidot.com/sprites:152
please, tell me if you like it and what is missing.

I've wanted to add this, but I can't figure out how to make it work across regions and keep compatibility with the current NML format - right now, it only stores the file IDs, but these vary between the U/E (not sure about J) versions of the ROMs.

hmm... so how do you do to know what file to edit? by name? or you read a id vs level table? If it's not possible with multiple NMLs you could implement a "patch export" feature. the user marks what levels to export into the patch, and the editor generates a patch file containing all the levels and the slot they come from (in a way that is valid for all regions). The extension could be NMP (P of patch). Then a "patch import" feature, that applies each level in the patch. It would be a VERY useful feature. users could post here a small and fast-to-apply NMP file

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
