StepMania's supported half doubles just fine since 3.9 or possibly even before then (although it's had a different layout until recently).
Pump Pro itself supports half doubles just fine with this change, only showing 6 panels.

what we want to be able to do is just to edit moves and attributes of the default characters, get the chance to make a rom patch out of that, and patch the rom with the modifications.
or better, have all characters in the ROm behave like the create-a-wrestler types
(default characters are brown, greys are completely editable)
later on maybe even expand the rom to hold more than 80 characters.
Most of the hacking efforts for the AKI wrestling games have been focused on WWF No Mercy. If you can find a way into the No Mercy Zone, that's where the main hacking takes place.
Not too many efforts have focused on ROM hacks yet, but hopefully they will in the future.
I suggest visiting both WldFb's archive and AJ's VPW Junk for more information, though to be honest, neither of us have been focusing on WM2K.

I remember the PC version of MK1 requiring you to read some pages in the manual for anti-piracy reasons; not sure if they added it to the later PC MK games, though. Probably just a leftover at best.

I found a metatile definition for this graphic in the US version of Super Dodge Ball:
However, I'm not sure how to access it in-game.
The definitions begin at 0x17A00 in a Super Dodge Ball (U) [!].nes rom.

So I guess aNESe + SmartRENES can disassemble MMC1 ROMS to a recompilable state... I was very pleased when I had tried it on Super Dodge Ball, so I started to spend a lot of my time commenting it.
It may not be anywhere near where I'd like it to be, but it's a start.
I've set up a temporary page here with a downloadable copy of the disassembly. Since my build process doesn't generate the CHR (yet), I have included it in the download. (I hope that won't be a problem.)

as far as I can tell, the door is unused and the Sel/Unsel tiles are just for reference.
all of the hearts on the top row are used (the latest additions are due to the Wither effect), and the bottom row of hearts should be the same (used in Hardcore Mode, iirc)
