Scores for round 1 have been totaled. I posted the math in the Round 1 thread.

Garmichael: 48
gridattack: 40
ray: 37
NsmB_PrO: 22 (42 without deduction)
dirbaio: 19 (39 without deduction)

Remember, this is only round 1. Round 2 could be a game changer!

Okay, looks like we've got all the submissions for May Round 2. Go ahead and get your critiques in. Try to get them done within the next couple days so we can tally up the scores.

What did every one think of the first month of the contest? For future months, I think three rounds would be ideal.

Is there enough support for a June contest of three rounds? I'd like to see at least five players, if not six or seven.

I can create the June Round 1 thread if you guys want to do the contest again.

I'm doing this in sort of a list format than a paragraph.

NSMB_PRO
Normal exit too close to the beginning.
First Powerup unnecessary because you have to get Mini Mushroom right after.
Mini Mushroom unnecessary, and the jump that requires it is too hard.
Cant get both streams of coins where you get into the pipe that shoots you up.
Floating coins are silly when not under water.
No Star Coins.
Too short overall.
To normal Exit: Blind fall, too easy to get 1up on flagpole.
To secret exit: Blind Fall, Secret Exit too easy to find.

Challenge: 10/10
Design: 14/20
Polish: 19/20
Total: 43/50

Ray
Don't put walkable ground below the screen where you cant see it.
Camera doesn't pan down enough, forcing you to make blind falls.
Crushing blocks unfairly set and too hard to get through. This is the case for the set of crushing blocks above the star man, and in the room with the star coin.
The secret exit is too hidden, with no indication that it's even down there.
Level is too random and doesn't have very much flow.
The various triggers that destroy blocks and make things appear are neat, and I like that there are a few different paths through the first area.

Challenge: 10/10
Design: 7/20
Polish: 15/20
Total: 32/50

GridAttack
There isn't much indication that you're actually making progress in the maze since each of the first three rooms look the same.
The invisible block coins under the first exit are too cheap and there aren't any hints to let you know to even try it.
The doors with the missing blocks under can still be entered if you stand on the very edge of the platform with mario standing mostly on air and pressing up.
The doors look silly with a magically appearing door that opens and closes, then disappears.
You can soft lock by ground pounding the block with the vine, forcing you to die and start over.
You cant hit the block with the vine in it from underneath if you're big.
Putting three blocks with powerups right next to each other is silly, too.
The invisible blocks under the entrance door to the fourth room are pretty cheap and not very intuitive that they're there.
Not enough time for the level.
There needed to be a midway checkpoint after the third room.
The warp point to the secret level is too hard to find, and can only be found by trial and error. If you make a mistake, you have to start the level from the beginning, which takes a while and isn't very challenging or fun once you know what way to go.

Challenge: 10/10
Design: 9/20
Polish: 18/20
Total: 37/50

Thanks for getting the critiques in, guys.

Here are the total points for this round:

NSmB_PRO: 41
Ray: 38
GridAttack: 41
Garmichael: 46

And here's the total score for both rounds:

Garmichael: 94
GridAttack: 81
Ray: 75
NSmB_Pro: 63
dirbaio: 19

NSmB_Pro: You would have been second place with 83 if you did critiques first round

Good game, everyone!

May contests are over! Final Scores are posted in the May Round 2 thread.

Does everyone want to do a June contest, or are we all kind of burnt out on it?

Also, I'm open to suggestions for the theme of the next contest.

I like the desert oasis idea.

Challenge: Hammer Brother's Desert.
Requirement: Uses the desert tileset, and there are at least five hammer brother creatures (this includes the ones that throw boomerangs or shoot fireballs).

How's this?

Also, I'm thinking that we drop the monthly total of scores, and just do it one contest at a time... One winner per contest. That way, no one is bound to doing a level for each contest if they don't have time.

How long do you all think is a fair amount of time to do a level without it being too long of a time? 10 days?

Any other suggestions for the contests?

[June 7 - June 17] NSMB Level Design Contest

Challenge: Create a Hammer Brother's Desert Level.
Requirements: Uses a desert tileset and there are at least 8 Hammer Brothers found in the level. They can be any type of Hammer Bros (Boomerang, Fireball, etc count), and you don't have to use one of each type.
Deadline: 11:59pm Pacific time zone Friday night (June 17, 2011)

To submit your entry, just post your level file in this thread. Youtube clips are optional, but help with critiques.

Critique Form

Challenge Requirement Met: 10 Points

Design: 20 Points
This is the general quality in design. When critiquing, ask questions like:
Is it fun? Is it well laid out? Does it match the theme of the challenge?

Polish: 20 points
This is the general level of polish. When critiquing, ask questions like:
Are there glitches not caused by emulation? Is there missing trim for the terrain or other tiles? Question mark blocks with powerups inside butted up against the roof? Are there any soft-locks (this is the term for when under certain circumstances, the player can't finish the level unless they die and start over).

Allright, sounds good.

If any mods are reading this, what do you think about making a subforum for contests? Each contest gets a thread, and I could see that cluttering up the main forum pretty quick.

I've posted the next contest here.

From now on, contests will be single events instead of multiple rounds for a month and a monthly winner. This will allow anyone to join or drop any contest and makes it easier to plan new contests without trying to squeeze them into a month.

I mean that there are four types of hammer brothers and you don't have to use all of the types. You just need 8 total of any types you choose.

I just played it. It's not bad. Kind of plain, but well done. You should enter the contests.

Forgive me if this has been asked, but I can't find the search feature for this forum!!!

Anyway, does anyone know how to change the panning of the background layers? Treeki and I found it once but I cant find where we were posting about it. If anything, does anyone know which Hex Block contains the data for backgrounds? I'm pretty sure it was a field there.

Edit:

Okay, so I found it. It's in Block 5.

Check this out:
XXXX YY00 YY00 FFFF FFFF AA00 BB00 CC00 DD00 0000

The Y's = the pallet.
AA = How fast the top BG scrolls horizontally.
BB = How fast the top BG scrolls vertically.

CC = Vertical Offset for top BG. The value pushes the background up from the point where the lower left of the graphic matches the lower left of the view.
DD = I dunno. Maybe Vertical Offset for Bottom BG, or possible horizontal offset for Top Bg.

I didn't dig into this too far and some of the variables might be wrong, But I did figure out what CC does.

Well, it looks like there aren't any more entries for this round, so we can't really pick a winner this time around since only the two of us would be judging. Maybe we can make a poll?

When I get home from work, I will critique your level anyway, grid. Just so you can get some feedback.

I'll edit this post and put your critique in.

I can say this though: this has been your best level so far. There are some polish issues I'll talk about, but I really liked it.

By the way, lots of people have been viewing these contest entries. Who is viewing them? How come more people aren't posting or submitting?
