The Year 2000 Problem as described by WXIA-TV, Atlanta, July 10, 1998:

"You open your eyes, slowly waking up. It's Saturday, January 1st, 2000. What time is it? You look at your bedside clock, but it's blank. Is the power off? You check your digital watch. It's blank, too. The coffee maker, which runs on computer microchips just like your wristwatch, doesn't work. The same for the microwave oven and the stove. Your three-year-old computer-controlled car won't start."

Ahh, end of the world stories, what would we do without them?

Operation: Red Arm site

So yeah. This looks to be pretty cool -- Red Arm will be a squad-based third-person shooter set in huge maps; it kind of combines aspects of Battlefield and Tribes. You control one member of your squad and AI takes over the rest of it; the game is also an experiment in AI and overall game design.

Still in development obviously -- the release date on Steam is most likely about a year from now. The team creating it also can't cancel the project because of the way they've been funded, so this is definitely going to happen. Right now they're trying to also raise a little more capital as both an incentive and to hire some voice actors and things like that, so they have a kickstarter page set up where you can get some nice stuff in-game (and outside of the game) for donating.

Posted on 06-04-11 11:46:32 AM, in Windows 8 (last edited by Bagel at 06-04-11 11:48 AM) Link
> Microsoft is trying way too hard. They need to stop trying to implement every single suggestion they get from everyone and "borrowing" features from the competition and draw a line somewhere. They hate sacrificing functionality and have to pack features into everything -- that won't fly on a tablet platform because it adds additional complexity to an interface that demands simplicity.

> Running full versions of apps on tablets has never worked. Just because a tablet can run ... for example full-blown Office doesn't mean people will want to use a touchscreen to fiddle with tiny cells in Excel, or select tiny text using their fingers in Word. Some people will fall for the "IT'S WINDOWS! ON A TABLET!" but they will be in a fairly small minority. Apple and Google have both been successful by having a completely separate OS with tablets in mind, instead of slapping a tablet-friendly UI on top of an existing OS and then ignoring the fact that any traditional program will be frustrating to use at best without hooking up a more traditional input method. If you're going to roll out Windows 8 for tablets with touchscreens, then make sure you have some software designed for touch to go with it. A system is really only as good as the software available for it, and if all there is at launch time is the same old programs designed for a mouse and keyboard, then Microsoft is shooting themselves in the foot.

> Microsoft could be a much more innovative company if they ditched the current management strategy. They need someone with vision to be in charge -- not someone with vision through dollar-sign-shaped eyes. Ballmer needs to go away.

Granted, the "classic" UI will still be there. If it's not, then Microsoft will have proven themselves to be so epically stupid that they shouldn't be selling anything at all.

A desktop would be ideal. You can get an excellent entry-level gaming rig that would probably do more than what you're looking for ... for about $600, occasionally less. If you don't care about not getting any helpful support, those off-brands on newegg like Cyberpower or iBuyPower actually build some really solid machines (I have an iBuyPower box.)

For about $700 you can get something with a Radeon HD 68xx card, or a GeForce GTX 460 that could power through Fallout without a problem, completely maxed out.

Just read that LulzSec apparently got into the US Senate Web site, and also attacked the CIA's site and took it down, probably just a standard denial of service attack.

So ... who else thinks these guys are screwed now?

Mail.app. Handles all my e-mail needs. Mobile version on my iPhone is less featureful but still functional.

I don't see anything labeled "My Computer." Just "Macintosh HD" and "Time Machine" -- so I guess I'll have to just listen to this instead.
