Honestly, I have to applaud the guy for maintaining some semblance of open-mindedness and actually admitting his doubts. If I was ever speaking to a congregation I'd not be afraid to admit that I had doubts from time to time -- that's kind of a natural implied part of following a religion, if you ask me.

The problem is more with the rigid, unchanging leadership surrounding him.

I made this post using telepathy.

Because bagels have telepathic powers, of course.

...Whoa, whoa, hey, now. There's no call for thinking something like that.

Around here it's more due to apathy than media, though. The local high school is full of babysitters, not teachers; I hear nightmarish stories coming from that place. It's because somehow these kids are being brought up to believe that being educated is uncool or otherwise without value, and that in order to succeed, you have to somehow "beat the odds" because it's perceived as being easier than going to school.

I'm not rescuing you if you don't open up a secret door to a weapon chest like the *nicer* Claptrap did in the other zone. Storage deck upgrades are nice but only if you have stuff to put into the inventory slots.

Posted on 03-31-11 03:22:52 PM, in Fun with malware (last edited by Bagel at 03-31-11 03:25 PM) Link
I've been having fun infecting a virtual machine running XP Home SP2 with all kinds of things. Doing searches like "free screensavers" in IE6 got me hit with Vundo from a driveby attack in an ad almost immediately.

Currently it's running conficker, Vundo, NavaShield, AntiSpyware Master, and ThinkPoint, and it's basically hilarious for some reason.

The all-too-common Vundo and NavaShield are by far the most annoying, but conficker uses a lot of CPU power. ThinkPoint only pops up fake alerts and sometimes prevents explorer.exe from running at startup. AntiSpyware Master also rarely pops up a message but mainly it was a dropper for Vundo.

NavaShield in particular is just a massive dick move. It uses proper English and looks legit and somewhat professional at first; it's really well done. Not only does it try to steal your money, but it also literally laughs at you. Sometimes it will pop up a slowly expanding fake message saying that your C: drive is being erased and block anything else from running. It's one of the most hardcore pieces of malware I've ever seen and is actually slightly frightening.

(note: not my video; I don't have any way to record my screen right now. derp)

I got an old version of iCab running on a Mac Plus. 4MB RAM, 8MHz Motorola 68000. It crashed (as in the bomb dialog came up saying I was out of memory) after trying to load anything more complicated than a text file or a blank page, though. The thing is already RAM-starved enough by running System 7.1, let alone iCab.

Getting the thing online at all required an external SCSI ethernet card. Just so happens that we had one in the basement. Not even kidding. <_>

Seriously, with very few exceptions, internet AFD jokes have not really been funny for years.

Especially the kind that last an entire day and limit access to content normally available.

Anyway, consider this my permanent resignation. Gray text is FAR too much CSS! It's hacking guys!!1111 We can't change the text color!!!! SO i am laeving!?!

I've seen utensils that eschew the combination of a fork and spoon and just have a fork at one end and a spoon on the other. To prevent food from sliding onto the handle when one end was in the air, they had a lip at the ends where the actual useful part of the utensil was. I haven't seen one of those things in a long time though.

INTJ, which is probably not a surprise. However, I do think the accuracy of this test is a little suspect. :p
