| definitely a graphics card problem, especially if you have a MB with an nvidia card, nvidia produced a lot of bad video boards for macbooks recently.
if it's an intel chipset, then take it to the genius bar, sounds like a heat or logic board problem (or both, since overheats can lead to logic board issues) in either case, the reason everything is stopping is because the system is detecting a hardware error, thus trying to shut itself down or draw a kernel panic. because the video board isn't working properly, the kernel panic is also not being drawn right (OS X does a rudimentary test on the hardware when panic() is called.) check the log in Console after you boot back up, if there isn't one, then it wasn't a kernel panic and it's a heat problem. if there is one, it's probably a heat and hardware problem. |

I am the super magical penguin. Uh ... basically a friend of hydrapheetz's. I am a design major in college and have enough training to have a degree in management at this point so I tend to sound condescending a lot of times when I am not trying to be. I am used to being in charge of people at work, sometimes that attitude carries over a bit. Apparently I have already made one post that I don't remember from 107 days ago. Huh. I read about this and just ... wow. Yeah, I agree. Someone is getting fired. Reinforcing a negative stereotype = a bad thing. I thought that maybe a legal department for a Fortune 500 company would understand that kind of a concept. Maybe Apple will realize now that Microsoft does have a point (they won't.) I freaking love OS X, and Apple's machines are fantastic in terms of software, but I need a new machine with a newer graphics card, and uh ... my old overworked MacBook Pro, despite being otherwise completely adequate, isn't compatible with a lot of the accelerations I need in CS4 and turboCAD (rendering complex 3D things with the CPU is about as fun as eating a thumbtack-and-sand sandwich.) And I can't afford the third-tier iMac (let alone a portable Mac) just to get a dedicated video board.
