If it's from an OEM, I'll often completely wipe the hard drive and start fresh, for two reasons: Manufacturers often fill the hard drive with backup/recovery/whatever partitions that I don't want, and secondly, manufacturers often fill Windows with a ton of trialware that I don't want either. Once the hard drive is shiny and clean, I can make my customary OS (usually Windows and Linux) and data partitions.

Then it's a matter of tweaking the OS to suit my liking once it's installed. Simply copying (most) everything in my home directory to the new system greatly speeds up the process.

I've never had any problems with their drivers, so long as the card in question is relatively new. Once you've had it for a couple of years and ATI has stopped caring about it, though, all bets are off.

Yep, Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" was released on Sunday. I haven't noticed any major changes since I upgraded, other than a different photo manager that I don't use anyway. The upgrade didn't break anything on my system, which is always a plus.

11.04 will be named... Natty Narwhal. Uh huh. Who comes up with these names, anyway?

I've never used Games for Windows Live myself, but I'd imagine the simplest solution would be to just create a new gamertag for yourself. It sounds like the game insists on you logging in to GfWL, so you'll likely end up using your old Windows Live ID or just making a new one.

I've heard good things about it. I enjoyed FO3, so I'm certainly in favor of a more polished version of the same. I'll probably end up getting it in a couple years when there's a crazy cheap sale for it on Steam.

The end of the school year at colleges is a magnificent time to dumpster-dive, since everyone's throwing stuff out. I've been able to pick up quite a bit of stuff over the past few years, including a functional laptop with a non-functional screen.
