It's astounding how many people just put all of their personal information on Facebook, including their phone numbers and addresses, and then develop this attitude that our loss of privacy is inevitable. It's insane.
There are many ways your personal information is being collected. For example, if your phone number/email is in someone's contact list and they downloaded the Facebook app to their phone, the app searches their list and collects the data. Even if you don't share anything on your Facebook account, if you simply have the account, they probably have more information tied to it than you would ever imagine. If you don't have the account, well gosh, you might receive an email that so-and-so has supposedly invited you to Facebook. I've had my private school email address receive invites from several people, including myself. Amazing! I've long since left Facebook, but the damage is done.
The only thing more disturbing than this attack on our privacy is that nobody seems to care. Anonymity is worth keeping if you still have it. |

Can he wait a month before buying the replacement? This is the absolute worst time to be purchasing a laptop, as companies are waiting for the cyber monday weekend in order to tout their fat discounts. If it is at all possible, wait a month!
Don't bother going in a store on black friday. On that weekend you'll find great deals online, especially with the aid of slickdeals.net and fatwallet.com.
camelcamelcamel is a great site that tracks price changes of items on amazon, bestbuy, and newegg. It has a chrome extension too. This way you can see how big the discounts really are.
Is it necessary that he gets a laptop? He'd get a much bigger bang for his buck if he were to build a desktop, especially if he's looking for a gaming rig. Hell, he might be able to build a computer and get a meager laptop for around that price, which is what I did. Just something to consider.
As far as specific recommendations, I've been impressed with Lenovo these days, and if I had that kind of budget, I would invest in one of their Thinkpads. I've had good experience with their customer service, and their laptops look sleek without being some kind of Apple copycat. Check it out, see how it compares to the Samsung one and his needs. |

I've gotta voice my support for Superplay Theater. "Superplay" is especially appropriate. It's unique enough and gives off that retro gaming vibe without sounding forced.
I just read this whole thread. I haven't looked at TAS in years, it's disappointing to see how broken of a community it's become. It's such a niche interest that there really ought to be a decent alternative, and I hope someone steps up to the challenge. I have only recently begun to seriously learn about web development, specifically programming and web design. I have a big interest in UI. I'm interested in helping, though I probably don't have much to offer.
Otherwise, paulguy pretty much sums the points I would like to see in a TAS alternative site:
Originally posted by paulguy So does their system only allow like 1 run per game or something, and that has to be the best one? It'd make sense that they could have like, the "best" one, then have other notable ones that are just amusing for some reason, like those family feud ones where people put in complete nonsense. I'm sure similarly amusing things apply to other games. Also it would make sense to have different methods too. Like, completely humanly possible runs, TAS runs without exploits and TAS runs with exploits, or TAS runs that only use certain exploits. Like, sure, people can beat super mario 64 with getting like no stars, but someone might want to see an all stars run or minimum stars required to beat it legitimately or something.

I haven't been interested in the Wii U either. I didn't even know about its release date until a couple of days ago. I don't like NSMB, don't care about the GamePad, don't need another device that can run Netflix. I'm just wondering if they'll start paying attention to the Virtual Console again. That would make the GamePad more interesting actually, if you could play Game Boy games on it. I'm also interested if Nintendo is capable of putting together a cohesive online experience. Failing that, I'll be watching the homebrew scene.
No matter what, I'm sure I'll buy it when they release another Smash Bros. That's the one series I'm still attached to. |

I had a fine thanksgiving with my family. Turkey meat is so cheap I end up cooking a few turkeys for myself around this time of year, subsisting off of turkey enchiladas, turkey sandwiches, turkey chili, etc. If freezer space wasn't an issue, I'd just stock up and live in perpetual thanksgiving.
I'm very thankful to be able to gorge on turkey and eggnog. |

Steak shouldn't be hard to chew. Sounds like you ought to be cooking it differently. Is it marinated? If you're just getting tough cuts of meat, a slow cooker is a great and easy way to make it tender and delicious. |

| I just found the css file + images for my old Cave Story layout, and I want to load them up again. Do you guys know of a reliable place to host a css file for free, or you think it'd be best to avoid linking to a file altogether? |

Fileden's never let me down. They have a bandwidth limit for free accounts but you could never feasibly hit it just using it around this place.
Perfect, just what I was looking for. Thanks. Now I just have to relearn CSS so I can figure out what's keeping my layout from expanding with the text field. |

If you really want to become a pixel artist, I strongly recommend you steer clear of just editing sprites. Focus on your own work.
I really like Pixel Joint for this kind of thing. There are tons of amazing examples, resources for artists, and a solid community behind it all. Here's a good tutorial to get started.

It was fucking hilarious, to the extent that the riffing (while funny as hell) was nearly superfluous. It was just so shitty that it transcended the boundaries of good and bad. To give you some idea of how bad it is, even Wikipedia seems a bit unsure of what the plot was supposed to be.
So in honor of masterpieces like Birdemic, I felt the need to create a thread for discussing various media that could be considered to be so bad it's good.
(Bonus points if you can find a movie more hilariously bad than Birdemic. This is my challenge for you, dear Julers.)
Pretty late, but you'll probably enjoy this "so bad it's good" podcast discussing Birdemic. It features the actress who played the lead woman in the film. She's pretty insightful and endearing. |
