While trying to get a language tutoring work-study job I somehow landed a web dev interview for work study at my college. This was in the middle of my language-learning college years, so I hadn't done much coding in years and the only thing I had to show off my web dev skills back then was a modified version of AcmlmBoard I had made that had a ton of features for learning Chinese that I was using at the time.... I got the job and the experience of having that job for 3 years is probably partly why I have a web dev job now...
I've also made a lot of friends here. Far more than anything Facebook / Twitter or other social media have done. |

This is useful. I never assumed anyone's gender by their username color (everyone has fun with the colors anyway) so this helps. Although probably would be more useful if English distinguished genders in the 2nd person as I don't find myself referring to people on the third person here often
Although, I can't help but wonder where we'd be if English had a usable (not "it"), truly gender-neutral (not "neutral he") third person singular personal pronoun (not "they").
In Mandarin Chinese for example, "he" and "she" are homophones, so technically it's always neutral |

They are written differently, though, right?
Yeah, the characters are different in writing (他 vs 她 vs 它) so it only really works in speech. The third one is essentially the Chinese equivalent of "it."
It gets worse in writing though, you can actually specify gender in the 2nd person singular, too. 你 is usually used and for all intents and purposes is neutral, but you can use 妳 to specify female gender (this is fairly rare, though, in my experience). Two characters like this was a natural evolution of 尔 (classical Chinese for "you"), I suppose. |

Rice, bean stew, and broccoli! The menu for this week.
Good thing I don't get tired of eating the same thing every day!

| On my mind right now is the fact that there are people here on Jul that were born after the US decision to invade Iraq. Things like that always blow my mind. |

Originally posted by Tarale The rice with chicken and beans looks good. I should figure out how to make that. Is there a recipe? It looks good for the little one (and everyone else in the family) to eat.
I'm gonna make fried rice soon. The kind that is full of all sorts of things because I can.
I didn't use a recipe, but here's more or less how I made it:
In a 4.4 quart caldero:
Fry about 1 or 1.5 pounds of boneless chicken thighs diced up, they were seasoned and marinated the night before with salt, garlic, black pepper, paprika, and vinegar.
Add one onion, diced up, and fry it with the chicken.
When the chicken is done, add the following into the pot:
8-10oz of tomato paste
5~ tablespoons of adobo (salt, garlic, black pepper mix)
2~ tablespoons of MSG
2~ tablespoons of paprika
2~ tablespoons of cut up culantro
Some vinegar
16oz of red kidney beans
40oz~ of water
Stir well on medium-high heat, keep uncovered, wait until it starts to boil and then add 6~ cups (gou / rice cooker cups) of rice right into the pot.
Stir often. Once there's visibly more rice than liquid on the pot (ie most of the liquid drained, but it's still quite soupy), cover the pot and lower the heat to low. Stir every 10 minutes, keep the pot covered after stirring. Should be done after 30-40 minutes.

Well, I'm just having some cookies because… fuck it
You should be able to find MSG on Amazon as Ajinomoto or Accent. Asian supermarkets will definitely have MSG. You can find the culantro in Asian supermarkets if they sell Vietnamese things too. Vietnamese people sometimes add culantro (ngò gai) to pho.
They're not super important (although the culantro does affect the taste fairly noticeably) if you can't find them though! I used to not use either because I couldn't find them before. |

Let's see how I did:
*Lost a bit of weight but not a lot. I guess.
*Did not finish any of my projects.
*See above.
*Got about half, but nope.
*RIP
*I did go to several places, so this one definitely happened.
As for 2019:
- Finish and release that big project I've been working on lately ( :o )
- Get in better shape, lol
- Continue with the languages I want to learn
Fewer goals, but #1 is far more important, as I've made a significant progress on it and it would be a huge shame if I didn't finish it. Hopefully I won't look at this post in shame a year from now.

I spend a lot of time on r/FireEmblem and r/FireEmblemHeroes I guess...? It's pretty much how I spend most of my online free time.
I think that probably counts. I probably wouldn't go to a meetup or something, though. |

| Usually summer, to be honest. I don't mind the heat, whereas cold temperatures are annoying usually. Spring and Fall tend to be annoying with deciding how to dress (cold mornings, warm/hot afternoons), so summer wins for me. |
