| People offering to get rid of ads = Free Money.
Ad revenue = Standard Income. Asking for people to donate = Emergency Funds. The way I see it, take any free money that's available. If none is available, use the normal means of income to cover any costs. In the event the income dries up, ask for money to fill the cracks until income is available again. From my perspective, accepting donations even during a period of self-sufficiency is not only acceptable, but a good idea. I don't consider it to be at all depreciating to pay for the site with donations if donations are available. I get the idea that you want to avoid donations because you see them on more the emergency funds side than the free money side. |

Pay day's next Saturday, so I hope I don't seem hypocritical for whining and then not donating. ![]() |

| After some considerations, and realizing I only ever spend my $1 notes on food two at a time, I decided I'd give dollar coins a go and see how I like it. And I like it! Nothing like taking exact change to a fast food joint and giving them a neat little stack of coins with no big, crumply pieces of paper in the way. I likes my dollar coins, and I've adopted the spending thereof as one of my many deliberate and trademark quirks.
What about you guys? Do you ever use the dollar coins? The oldest ones you're likely to encounter are the Eisenhower dollars, minted in the 70's. I saw a guy just the other day who had a couple of these in a fistful of change while counting out smaller coins for his food. Then there's the Susan B. Anthony from 1979 (through 1981), as well as 1999. Nowadays, dollar coins are those gold-colored ones featuring Sacagawea and the presidents. These are the only ones I'll accept from bank tellers, as I'm kinda picky about using coins that are still current. Anything older becomes a collectible, and I'm in it for the purchasing power. So far, my quest has been a bit interesting. Banks never seem to have very many on-hand, and a lot of cashiers have never seen the presidential coins before, despite having been minted for two years. In any case, I'll make my little impact on the world one meal at a time! Oh yeah, any tips on where I might be able to get ahold of full, $25 rolls of these things would be appreciated. I'm not interested in spending $35 at the US Mint website, though, as buying money at face value and still coming out short has its ethical implications. |

| EDIT: The article I linked disappeared. But imagine it's still there and a very interesting read.
It's a pandemic now! I was about to say that the news always forgets to mention that swine flu is not a particularly dangerous disease, but the article I just linked does in fact say so. Swine flu symptoms are similar that to your plain vanilla influenza, but they're generally very mild and go away after a week or so without any medical attention whatsoever. Most people who get it won't even know it. Having said that, there have been severe cases and a number of deaths from the virus. It's important to stress that the young, the elderly, pregnant women and those with existing medical conditions are more at risk of having severe symptoms from swine flu. Then again, this is true of any illness. My main interest in the whole swine flu business is the politics. When I first heard about some mutated pig virus killing off the Mexicans, I thought "Hmmm, maybe I should look into this so I know what we're up against," and found that the common cold is usually more severe. But the news continues to say that it's the most terrible thing since Hitler... What's going on, I wondered. Turns out that the fact it's a "new" disease is what has people up in arms. Governments are so caught up in preventing and/or containing the outbreak that they go through such extreme measures--measures that, in the end, have shown to be ineffective. But they're so interested in keeping this new illness at bay that they completely overlook the fact that existing diseases that the general public is exposed to every year are far more dangerous and people still manage to make it through the season alive. Aaaaanyways, that's just my 2¢. I had a few extra, and this rounds it out to a dollar for me to take to the bank and exchange for a coin. *Rimshot* |

| Like auto work, I avoid doctors unless I need them to do something I can't do myself. I haven't been to the doctor since... um... I think it was when I broke my arm in sixth grade. All too often, doctors say "Well, we have these expensive medications to treat your individual symptoms, and I get all sorts of money for getting you to buy them!" when your collection of symptoms may very well be indicative of a more serious condition. |

| I'm not being critical with this, but I'm honestly curious as to why some people have a sort of "treasure hoard" mentality when it comes to dollar coins. They're nothing new: even the gold-colored ones have been around for nine years. They're still a dollar: they won't become more valuable sitting in a treasure chest. The presidential ones are collectible just as the state quarters were, but do you really need more than one of each per person?
I could ask any number of questions, but I'm just baffled by this one concept: why stash them away? |

| A co-worker a couple days ago showed me an old, worn-down coin she had. It was a half dollar from 1917; a design different from the half dollars of today. She also had an Eisenhower dollar minted in her birth year, and for some reason the tarnish/filth/whatever made most of the coin look gold instead of silver like it should.
Also, my last round of dollar coins (picked up 7 of the suckers yesterday) were all different: 6 presidents and a Sacagawea. I finally broke out that old song by Johnathan Coulton: The Presidents (2005): |

| You might want to consider pre-buffering the audio output into memory, skipping over the blank spot, then sending the good data to the mixer. Sorta make a mini-extension to the decoder. While it shouldn't be necessary in the first place, it should be a simple implementation. |

| SeaMonkey for me. Back in the day when Netscape sold their soul to the dev-... I mean, AOL... their partnership with Mozilla came to an end and Mozilla released a new browser--then simply called Mozilla--which was effectively the same as Netscape Navigator only, well, not Netscape. Even today it retains its infamous Back/Next/Reload/Stop button graphics.
When Mozilla introduced Firefox, it was "all the rage" and people flocked to it like GameCube enthusiasts to Super Smash Bros. Brawl on release day. I don't remember what scared me away from it... I think it was maybe the way that the search function by default just gives you this inconspicuous entry field on the bottom instead of the more familiar dialog box? Either way, I never really went with that browser and just stuck with vanilla Mozilla, which was then re-named SeaMonkey. The two browsers are effectively equivalent with different user interfaces. |

| Coming out here to Washington, I brought with me a little Novatell Wireless USB internet dongle thing that I use through the Verizon network. It's very handy, as it's portable broadband that doesn't cost too much a month and I don't have to be near a wireless access point or what have you in order to use it.
But today... it was wonky! Turns out it was actually because of that little 3-inch USB extension cord that's useful for A) connecting USB flash drives that are shaped so obnoxiously you can't fit them into the spot where the USB port is and B) keeping delicate devices that normally just stick out of the computer from getting accidentally knocked and damaged. I used one such cord for purpose B, and the cord is going bad due to constant flailing every time I move my laptop around. The short-lived anti-internet scare led me to realize something, though. How long have I been using the internet? Years. Several years. How many days have I gone without internet, on purpose? I'd say the number is probably less than 25, at least from the point when the internet became commonplace and not just that special time you take out of your day to dial up for a half hour. But yeah, internet's like a blood filter these days! An extension of the psyche! I realized that whenever I'm not working or sleeping, I tend to be right here in front of the screen, clicking various links or checking to see if any new posts have been made or any new articles have gone up. There's so much I could be doing, but I'm not doing it! Well, since I have no particular obligations online, I have decided to do the unthinkable: I will go for a week with no internet! On purpose! Fret not: this is not merely a whim; I've been considering such a fast for a while. But I figured now was a good opportunity to do so, so I will. At 0:00 Eastern tonight (which is when the calendar flips over to June 15), I'll be offline for a week. If I need emergency directions or if I need to place an order for something, I may use the internet for those purposes, but otherwise... nothing. And I have no reason to believe that I'll use the internet at all for the next week. Instead, I'll have to find other things to do with my time. Pull out old video games? Work on something? Go outside and... socialize!? Such unfathomable opportunities will be presented to me. Well, guess I have an hour left. Leave your comments here in the mean time! *Waits for the obligatory "See you tomorrow!" post* |

| More of it's just curiosity to see how I'd spend my time with no internet. Either way, it's time and I spent my last three dollar coins at Jack in the Box. Stupid Sunday making the banks closed...
See you at this time next week! |
