Slight change in plans... wait, maybe "slight" isn't the right word...

Work is not so boring anymore. This is because of things and stuff. The net result of this, of course, is that I no longer need gpTetris on GBA to occupy my spare time. Instead, I'll make myself happier by moving the project off of a little handheld system and onto something a little more preferred: personal computing systems!

True to form, I'll be supporting Microsoft Windows and any Linux running X Window System. This will beef me up with full-screen visuals, high-speed calculations, online capabilities and whatever else my programming little brain wishes to think up. Since I seriously doubt I'll be able to bog down anything but the most pitiful of system configurations, I should have the liberty to do whatever I want and everybody will be happy.

Just imagine... an online Tetris where each opponent (regardless of how many there are) can configure their own rotation system and all that fancy crap.

*Glances over at his collection of legally purchased music CDs* Uh... I guess the moral of the story is that if you don't want to get caught, don't break the law.

Or at least, don't put it on public file hosting solutions like RapidShare. Nothing beats a sign in front of your house that says "Crack Sold Here!"

It seems to be dead again. Perhaps it's still laughing at Yoshi the Unusually Realistic Dinosaur? I know I was for a while, which with my swollen throat didn't go over too well.

I was considering how I wanted to do the graphics of the game and found that there's no elegant way to accomplish what I envision in my head without, like, a billion different rendering passes.

As far as tetromino appearence is concerned, The New Tetris is very close to what I want to do, though they've cut a few corners (probably due to technical limitations) that make it not look quite as polished as it could be to the trained eye. The main issue here is having tile graphics transition from one shape to another, such as when the four-segments tetromino lands and becomes one segment, or when a square is formed and all four tetrominoes fuse together. The only way to properly give the right effect is to render complete, uncomposited layers and blend between them, but the way things have to be set up require a sort of bevel overlay on top of the cells to show the edges.

In short: an overlay cannot be blended into another overlay without having their transparent parts overlapping and producing an effect other than what's desired... I think. This wouldn't be a big issue under normal circumstances, but I also want to be fancy and have the underlying cells decorated in various--and dynamic--ways. So the immediate response is this: CANNOT DO.

On top of this, my desire to have a Tetris of my own has subsided ever since that last GBA build I put up. This means I'm not too interested in making a gpTetris, and think it would be silly to continue. But don't worry: I have an idea!

I'm perfectly willing for this to be the basis of a sort of "Jul Tetris" project. I'd gladly be part of such a project, even in the capacity of lead programmer. It just wouldn't be my project that way, which is the big difference (group projects tend to be more fun). It can be all open-source and cross-platform and what-not, as well as combining the talents and ideas of people in the community. Should there be enough interest for such a project, we can start up a new section/thread for it, set up a little web site and whatever else.

So ponder, then discuss!

I'm one of those guys who knows as much about how the computer does things as he does about what he wants the computer to do, so I'm all for going for the juicy performance at the expense of production time. As such, I would recommend C over C++. It saddens me when people don't know how simple things are pulled off like how strings are managed in memory or what-not.

I don't actually get sleepy until that 36-48 hour range, but I always wake up feeling the most rested after, like, exactly 10 hours. Working the swing shift has been nice for me, since I still get off work before midnight and still don't have to wake up and go to work in the morning. I've just been setting my alarm for 9am arbitrarily and tend to get to bed by 12. Despite doing this for the past three months or so, I still tend to hit the alarm at 9 and find myself waking up a second time at exactly 10:00.

I've decided to stay as far away from human life as possible. I hate baseless tradition, and I despise people trying to feel special because of who/what they are.

I'm gonna get hungry eventually, and I don't have any food in the house. I'm gonna have to... emerge!

In addition, PC Pro has published a list of PC makers which “took Intel’s kickbacks” (which include Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and NEC).

I had to chuckle while reading this on an AMD-driven HP computer.
