Yes, going after those who do it will be pretty difficult, but they'll certainly be able to make the already-hard-to-find tools scarce. Right now the only way to get a phone unlocked here is to either pay $$$ to a shady guy in the mall or hope the carrier is kind enough to do it for you (hahaha), and things like rooting and installing custom ROMs require some Googling to find the tools on some ad-infested forum... not going to get easier if they go around attacking the sites hosting these things, not to mention the people developing them in the first place.

Yeah every article from the EFF tends to sound sensationalized, but they're not making it up either; they mention extreme, but still possible situations.

it's not like the hacking scene was dying
before a magical court ruling that legalised it
Making these things (and by extension, hosting any tool, information, or discussion related to them) illegal sure won't help.

and how and why would the FBI
know you hacked a console
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeypot_%28computing%29
Not like the FBI is going to go after everyone who merely uses hacks, but just knowing that they'd be able to if they wanted isn't exactly great. Mainly, it's another way to go after people like geohot, which in turn hurts the development of those hacks you use.

also finding how to
root a phone is pitifully easy

google "root phonename"
Depends on model.

and it should be 'difficult' to find so people
who would break their phone won't
If you can follow simple instructions, you'll be fine. Most of the time the process is like "turn the phone on while holding this button, plug it in, run this program."
Of course, that's because people make those programs that do the hard work for you, which they're not going to be as eager to do if it's outlawed.
But hey, power tools should be hard to find and awkward to use so people don't hurt themselves with them, right?

Anyway really the main concern is "what next?". With this ruling the situation becomes "you're not allowed to modify or repair something you bought and paid for, and the seller is allowed to lock it down to be unable to work with any other provider." How many other things will this apply to, after phones and tablets? PCs? Cameras? Routers? Cars? (They're full of computers!)

The occasional person might think the title refers to sports, but they'd quickly see otherwise when they looked at the site.

My idea for a speedrun site was to just basically be a database of videos. For each video you'd have fields:

  • Which game (obviously), platform, and version

  • Links to the video on Youtube, archive.org, torrents and wherever else it's available

  • Play length (by input length and by in-game timer, if available)

  • Whether it's TAS or realtime

  • Rating (user votes)

  • Goal

  • Authors and all the usual stuff you'd have for a video

You would be able to define multiple goals for each game (e.g. warpless, 100%, fastest completion, glitched) - each would list its rules, and anyone could define a new goal for their run. Users would be able to sort by whatever fields they like, so finding the fastest video would be a simple sort by play length, while some might want the most entertaining (sort by rating) or newest.

To me this seems like the most sensible system - just catalog the videos and raw data and let users decide what they want to see. None of this obsolescence nonsense; if you want the best time, sort by length and there you go.

I'd think tag-like categories are fine, there clearly should be a difference between "beats the game the intended way" and "teleports to the middle of the ending", or even for doing some odd challenge or being in a situation impossible to reach in-game.
The idea is to categorize runs that are intended to show stuff rather than COMPETITIVE FRAME VIDEO GAMERS.
Categorizing them in a way that clearly differenciates "routes" and shows similar tricks done in other videos in that category would be best.

That's definitely what I had in mind. I've seen some interesting TAS goals like "fastest crash", as well as just adding new goals or rules to the game, like "fastest to collect every coin in world 1" or "beat the game with the lowest possible score". I'd want to encourage these kinds of new ideas alongside the traditional "get to the ending as fast as possible" and "beat everything as fast as possible" runs.
As I see it though, "TAS" would be just another tag/category. I guess there's somewhat of a divide between the communities, though.

Also, embedded html5 video players with the ability to overlay user comments (via <track> tag) plz.
