I just joined, but I've been a pretty avid TCRF reader for a while (even made an edit a few years ago to the Half-Life prototype article), and I've occasionally stumbled across this place looking for info on Dinosaur Planet. I decided to join basically just because I like the forum software used here more than phpBB or similar, it reminds me of when I was a little kid absorbing people's Web 1.0 sites and fits very nicely on my laptop's 1024x768 display. Hopefully I'll end up sticking around for a few years, and hopefully the forum does too, because it'd be a shame to lose so many years of history.

Hi, I'm new here, and... have only a faint idea of what this place's culture is like.

I'm not really a product of that culture. I'd generally like to consider myself relatively unassuming and not particularly quirky or unique or whatever. However, I also prefer forums over social media (including Discord, I don't really like using it for whatever reason) for various reasons and this forum software specifically over something like phpBB, and I like old game prototypes, so here I am. I try not to cause issues, sometimes I read people wrong or just don't get social cues though, so if I do get into any problems, they're probably on me.

You'll probably find me around somewhere talking about Dinosaur Planet or 64DD, or homebrew games. Sometimes a combination of two of the three. Also, I have the bad habit of using the name "Ultra 64" despite the renaming, just know that when I say Ultra 64, I usually mean retail consoles. I have no good reason to do this besides just preferring the name.

Anything cool I end up doing, I probably just stumbled upon it blindly without really knowing what I was doing, and asking me to replicate it would leave you empty-handed. Sorry.

I guess I'll see you all around sometime.

I just beat Super Mario Land and it was a complete and total pain, even with save states. I might just not be good at platformers, but it didn't seem to be too fond of the idea of me pressing buttons, given how many times I'd be holding a button down (such as B to run) and it just... wouldn't acknowledge that I was.

On the side I'm also challenging myself to beat Super Mario 64 without doing any of the minibosses and trying to get through PMD: Explorers of Darkness. So far I'm not enjoying it as much as Red Rescue Team, but right now I'm not really playing anything actively.

I played a lot of Microsoft Train Simulator as a kid, it's still pretty decent if you're into that kind of thing, with a ton of mods available. I've been playing SimCity 4 for a few years now and even started getting into modding it myself, not my first game mod but the first mod I finished, but I like it even more than SimCity 2000, which was one of my favorite games as a kid. Besides that, probably the original Sims game.

Massive chunky-size page elements. I get that mobile web is a thing now, but come on, user agents are also a thing. If I have a mouse, I should be able to have reasonably sized, space efficient web pages, not these bloated, ad-infested pieces of garbage that only show three or four things on a single screen. Maybe it's better at 1920x1080, I don't know, but even zooming out doesn't really solve the problem, it just makes the elements more spaced out.

Games: Dinosaur Planet for sure, it's my pick for GOTY 2001. Besides that, a build of Pokémon from 1993 or 1994, or more 64DD stuff would be cool. Super Mario 64 at Space World 1995 is an obvious one, but something from 1994 would also be interesting to see. Maybe more Half-Life stuff, or The Sims ca. 1998. Really, though, anything we get is pretty cool. Writing this post, it's just occurring to me how vanilla the games that I like are.

Non-game stuff: SDK stuff for Ultra 64, detailed 64DD hardware schematics, stuff like that.

Personally, I think DP could be possible. Multiple versions of Windows NT got source leaked in 2020, and Microsoft owns Rare. It might just be coincident timing, but with any luck...

Yeah, pretty much that. It was actually a struggle to think of the three worst commercially released games I've played, which were the Lost Spatula GBC game, Monster Truck Mayhem on the GBA, and this Wii shovelware party game with monkeys. Lost Spatula was competent but kinda boring, but MTM and the monkey game both were so boring and in the latter case incompetently done that I genuinely dreaded just owning them. I don't think I could sell either one for more than $1. I've played Sonic 06, and while I was never under the illusion it was particularly good, I also never really considered it as bad as the Internet made it out to be, just a game forced out as a prototype by higher ups in order to hit the 2006 deadline.

For freeware, probably the DS homebrew Snipeémon, mainly because that's the worst one I played that actually has recognizable gameplay and isn't such an early alpha that nothing functions. Besides that, some Mario flash game from the 2000s or maybe a hobbyist DOS game. I don't really know, it's been years since I've played a flash game that wasn't Interactive Buddy. I've never so far played a horrible C64 game, but I guess it's not out of the question.

I actually want to try more of the fun bad games, or even just games that are bad enough to be memorable like Bubsy 3D, but I'm on a 15 year old laptop running an OS that's neither Windows nor runs WINE, so I'm out of luck there. On my list are games like Big Rigs and CD-I Zelda, maybe Lula 3D as well if I have nothing better to do. But really, I still definitely prefer good games. Like Dinosaur Planet.

So, that Ultra 64, huh? Pretty cool console, wish 64DD happened in America. But you know what they say, want something done right you gotta do it yourself.

I usually get around 85 to 90, at least when I care about capitalization, decent punctuation, and stuff like that, which is most of the time when I'm typing publicly or directly to paper on my Electronic Scholar typwriter. Typing notes for myself, or talking to my partner, I loosen up a little. Though at that point I'm usually on mobile and so I'm slower. This browser has a weird thing where when I try to type an apostrohpe I end up with thorn (Þ) instead, I have no idea why since no other program does this, so that slows me down, alongside the small and uniform laptop keys making it really easy to accidentally hit the wrong key.

I just bought a 64DD after years of wanting one though it hasn't got here yet, entirely thanks to the stimulus checks bringing the price I had to pay out of my own pocket down to $490. Perks of being a teenager and not having to worry about monthly expenses but still being able to make money in other ways, I suppose. I don't currently have a stable address, my family and I are staying with my grandma while we look for a new home, but when I do I'll probably be buying myself HRT every month until I can get myself to an informed consent clinic, I have $2600 saved up for that purpose, which should be way more than enough. I started back in late June and it was pretty amazing, so I'd really like to start again soon before I turn 20.

I bought my 2005 Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop for $25 on eBay, free shipping. It doesn't like Puppy Linux all that much and ends up locking up when doing more than one thing at a time on PL, but Haiku runs... relatively great, and supports fairly modern web browsers, Otter specifically being the one I'm currently using. A little buggy and has no drivers for any hardware newer than ca. 2000, but it's still in Beta 2, they have time. ReactOS just can't handle the laptop's hardware at all, and is nearly unusable for any actual work. XP/2000 run perfectly, it was designed with them in mind, but XP/2000 don't really have many new web browsers coming out for them besides maybe New Moon.

For fun, I ran NT 3.51 on it with no trouble at all, and it even had decent performance. I didn't expect that for such new hardware, but I suppose it wasn't yet worlds away from the mid-1990s hardware that it was designed for.

Posted on 01-03-21 11:50:19 PM, in Past OS(es)? (last edited by rokken at 01-03-21 11:55:34 PM) Link
Started off with Windows 2000 SP4, back in probably 2006 or so. Upgraded to XP in '08, but tried to make it as 2000-like as possible. Then in 2010, I had 7 for a few months before I got some bad viruses and Dad, getting sick of me getting viruses from downloading off doperoms, put Mandriva 2010 on that computer instead. I enjoyed using it a lot, and it's why I still prefer MATE to this day. There was also a laptop I had that I played around with VMs on. 95, 3.1, DOS. All three I played around with a lot.

That computer died and the laptop wasn't really good enough so I ended up getting a hand-me-down real laptop, though it wasn't very good, it was a Lenovo G555 that ended up literally melting on me and dying. To this day I still really don't trust Lenovo products. It had Windows 7 at first, and then Ubuntu 9.04 just for fun, and then back to W7.

But yeah, it died in 2014, so I got another laptop for my 15th birthday and just had to make do with the netbook until then. The new laptop had Windows 8.1 that my dad pre-installed Classic Shell on, which is probably why I don't hate 8.x like the rest of the Internet did. I ended up installing Vista on it to try it out, and realized I actually like Vista now that hardware caught up to it.

When that laptop started getting too many problems to keep going (the keyboard half broke and the touchpad just didn't work at all), I ended up getting another desktop, which is my main computer when I'm not moving. It used to have Windows 7 on it, I wiped it and installed Slackware for a while, but that ended up getting replaced later on. I had ReactOS 0.4.13 installed on hard drive #3, but it refused to boot, so I ended up just wiping that drive and using it for storage instead.

On my current laptop, I used to have NT 3.51 installed on a 6 GB partition alongside 2000 SP4, and I really liked it, but the partition got corrupted so I had to reformat. Actually, the whole disk corrupted for some reason, so I just had to start over. First with Whistler 2419 but that didn't work, so then XP and Bionicpup, but eventually I got kinda bored with XP and wanted an OS that could run the internet that wasn't the apparently slow and bloated Puppy. It's still technically installed but I'm just verifying I backed up my home folder away from formatting the partition and using it for storage, or alternatively a new XP install. I'm also wanting to get 3.51 installed again.

Desktop (HP Pavilion p7-1155, plus an Nvidia GeForce GT 640 and 8 GB of RAM):
- Ubuntu MATE 18.04
- Windows Vista Ultimate SP2
- I tried to install ReactOS 0.4.13 onto it, but it bluescreened on boot.

Laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200, 1280 MB RAM and 1.6ghz Pentium M):
- free partition for NT 3.51 eventually, waiting to use my burned CD so I don't need to write to my flash drive that has Haiku on it, that way I can reinstall Haiku's bootloader once it overwrites it with Redmond's offering.
- Haiku R1/beta 2
- Bionicpup 19.03, very disappointing and soon to be replaced with either nothing or Windows XP. I doubt Vista would run satisfactorily on this laptop (the only reason I run it on my desktop is that it's more than equipped for it while still being old enough that the hardware was out while Vista was still getting drivers), but I suppose I could always try.

Desktop II (Dell Optiplex GX1, 350 MHz PII and 128 MB RAM and I threw a Sound Blaster Live! in there):
- Windows 98 SE, but the install is so broken and I just don't like 98 in general that I'm probably going to either just install a DOS of some variety, maybe FreeDOS, maybe PC-DOS 7.1, or look into something completely different like Rhapsody or BeOS. Maybe even Haiku. The choice would be easier if I had multiple hard drives installed in it.

I will never, ever install Windows 10 on anything. I have no problem using an OS until it becomes impossible to get work done on it, even if it's been out of support for decades (see NT 3.51), so when the time comes that Vista becomes impossible to use, I'll hop on over to a customized 8.1 with as much Vista stuff in it as possible until ReactOS catches up with W10. Though, I've had a lot of luck with WINE besides stuff that needs direct I/O hardware access like my Game Boy cart reader/flasher, so maybe that's not even necessary.

Good things that happened in 2020 for me:
- first anniversary with my partner
- got to experience transitioning for a month, it felt amazing
- stayed with Dad in rural Tennessee over the summer, helped him put up a mobile garage, fixed my first piece of broken computer hardware
- did a lot of Norwegian learning, can kinda understand it now (seems I'm not alone in that regard)
- bought the first dedicated GPU I've had in... seven years or so
- graduated high school, was really easy thanks to having paper packets each worth a whole credit
- worked on a Game Boy homebrew, flashed it to cart, it ran. Still really need to work on it more, though
- December 31st came and went without an atom bombing

Overall it was a surprisingly inoffensive year for specifically me and few other people. Sure, lockdowns and stay-at-home orders got me down like everyone else, but I was already extremely-online and can't drive, so it wasn't life-changing. I did end up catching the virus somehow, but I've mostly recovered. Incredibly annoying, though. Overall, 4/10 year for me

Usually whatever editor is bundled in. Right now, I'm usually using Pe, with StyledEdit for notes and clipboard dumping and stuff. Tried getting into Paladin, but it's... just really different from what I'm used to. If you include word processors, I really like FocusWriter.

Posted on 01-04-21 05:59:15 AM, in forums v. discord v. social media Link
Originally posted by Rambly

i think they all have their own distinct feelings, though. discord can feel pretty overstimulating, and forums kind of give you a break from the constant noise. i guess i'd say discord kinda has the same energy as being in a room full of people, a relatively closed space, all talking to them or hanging out with them. forums kind of feel like... public spaces? they feel larger. kind of like to a nice downtown area or a public park. everything kind of remains kind of static unless someone changes it, and they feel really cozy and familiar as a result, i think. but they can still feel lively in their own way because you still get the evidence of things changing and growing slowly.

Those are several of the reasons I don't like using Discord; my personal space bubble is a little too wide for it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not antisocial, but I just don't feel comfortable with the room full of people vibe you're describing. It's too close, and also too fast paced for me, I just can't keep up with it and it overwhelms me. I'm just not an especially intimate person really, I like having a bit of space between myself and the outside world. I can't tell you why, but Discord just feels a little too constricting to me, a little too exclusive, and way too fast paced. I don't like exclusivity. I can see why it would be very cool to someone else, but that person really isn't me. I really did try to like it, though.

So I prefer forums. The public feeling of it is nice, and I can maintain a bit of a shell between myself and the forum while still being able to interact with it. There's no pressure to react in seconds to a conversation lest another take its place, no need to join yet another forum you're never gonna look at again just to download a game or something, and it's usually a lot easier to search for past conversations. Plus, you don't really see people spamming the link to their forums everywhere they go, at least not anymore. Maybe it was a thing back in the early 2000s, but...

I used to use Twitter, but it got to the point where every post I saw was either electoral politics that I don't really have any interest (or stake, in the case of European politics) in or just memes that weren't funny and everything there was just designed to be disposable, so I just stopped using it after my 6,666th post. Nowadays I only ever see it when someone specifically links a post, and I'm happier for it. I still want to keep an online journal, and I kinda set up my neocities page for it, but I'm just an incredibly lazy person and don't want to manually fill in all the HTML just to say something like 'today was terrible, wish I had some more HRT, I should probably give that email a proper reply. Bye now!' every single post.

Twitter was mostly just an online journal for me, but it wasn't a particularly decent one, so I ended up moving over to Mastodon. It functions just fine and 500 characters is way better than 280, but the instance I picked while seemingly decent at the time eventually degraded to the point half the people there are robots reposting the same few prepackaged lines or ridiculous memes over and over. It somehow still is less annoying than Twitter, which is an accomplishment.

This post might be incomprehensible nonsense, it is way, way later than I should be up (2:48 am), and I really need to be sleeping, since for some reason I wake up at about 8:30 no matter when I go to bed. Sorry if it is.

Posted on 01-06-21 12:35:18 AM, in Disappointing Games Link
My biggest disappointment in gaming was when Nintendo released the 64DD mail-order only until 2000.

Okay, but for real, in terms of the most disappointed I've been with a game was probably some flash game, or similar freeware. There probably should be two categories of disappointing, disappointing in a good way (when there's a game that's great except for there just not being enough of it to be satisfying, for example) and disappointing in a bad way (this one's obvious).

Disappointing in a bad way would probably be Half-Life 2 for me. It's not itself a bad game, not at all, but it just doesn't really follow up from the original game. Too different to be a good sequel. Besides that, Super Mario Land has horrible controls making it a pain to play (on both original hardware and emulation, it sometimes fails to register button presses), and any Animal Crossing after AC e+ just doesn't have the same vibe for me, but New Leaf on especially disappoint me because now I'm above the citizens of the town rather than being one of them, leaving me completely devoid of the same feeling of Population: Growing! or e+ where it feels like living in a cozy little village and getting to know a living, breathing town that's existed long before you moved in, just being a part in a larger, already oiled machine. Smash kinda has the same problem for me; 64 has a feeling to it that all the later games lack, they feel too sterile and official while 64 gives me the feeling I'm in an underground ring in an alley and I could be stabbed at any time.

Disappointing in a good way would probably be Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team. It's still my favorite game in the series by a long mile, but if you do just the story rather than grind (which the plot encourages you to do because the quests where you're able to take a break to do side missions are if I remember right all motivated by immediate obvious danger to a character), you can beat it in probably five hours. I just wish there were a few more missions, I wish that
, and I wish there were a few more mechanics. But I think the plot and world are great, better than Explorers. And this is just me, but in the same franchise, I'm stuck on the Gold 97 hack and can't progress, so it's done for me, but I really enjoyed it while it lasted. The Life's End mod for Half-Life was amazing and the fact that it extended the gameplay that much while (AFAIK) not touching the game code at all is impressive, but I feel it could have had a couple more maps. It doesn't overstay its welcome at all.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
