I disagree. I like the thought of having to kick the P-Switch over the cactus during the midair jump to the vine. The only bad part is if you manage to kill the Yellow Koopa for good, but luckily that's why the Midway Point is so close to this part.

Yeah, I hate this part too, but I think the Beezos go well with the terrain structure and the Venus Plants. I could take HH's suggestion, but it would take some setting up... Maybe I'll get to it some other time.

Well, actually they send you to Level C8 or 1C8 depending on the overworld status, and if you fall off the level you activate the Normal Exit without losing a life. Fixing the coin counter is easy, though; all I have to do is add some code in the block ASM file that sets his coins to 99 if they're any higher than that. But make "99" into "P6", now, 'cause I changed a hex value to let Mario carry 256 coins instead of 99. He'll need them for shops.

Bonus Stars I haven't done anything to, anymore.

I don't think the crab looks weird at all. The Tweeter's palette was chosen to make him look like a desert creature. And tell me again how enemy variety is a bad thing? It really isn't...

These are good suggestions, but none of them really suit my style. I've been doing the hacking thing for a while, and I tend to do things outside of the box...

No need to re-do it until you have more of your hack done. By then your level quality will have overall improved. Just look at Chaos Control... Worlds 6 and 7 have much, much better levels than Worlds 1 and 2. (That was one of my mistakes actually.)

Eh, down the road, who knows?

And yes, you can consider me sort of a "radical" on the subject of Autism, but for it rather than against it, which is opposite of most Autism-related radicals. Heh.

Social awkwardness?

One time I asked the girl in my high-school newspaper class why she had a mustache. In front of everyone. I never got why she cupped her mouth and began screaming into her hands, her face red.

Several months later I had to ask another girl, in front of her friends, whether she was a boy or a girl. I couldn't tell, 'cause her hair was slicked back like a guy and she was flat-chested, two things which I also ended up telling her. And I never got why she burst out laughing and her face turned red. I think she even cried by the end of it.

These things still puzzle me. Would I do it again? Probably, knowing me.

Oh yeah. MUCH better. Wonderful work on the curtains-- you get an A for effort.

Okay, new one for me. I'm trying not to be a showoff by posting all these videos, but either way this one's not as good as my desert level, I think... Love the foreground graphics, though.
<object width="425" height="350"> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eeJM_aadt5E" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"> </embed> </object>

This is just the first half of the level. I haven't made the second half yet, and when I do you won't get to see a video of it, sorry.

And yes, the Dire Chuck takes infinite hits to kill.

I think I'll scrap one of the plants and the Rhino. ...The tough part is, to get the turnstyle platforms to display correctly, I had to set Sprite Memory to 0E, which fixes that problem fine, but also clips the graphics on other sprites instead if too many are on the screen. What a dilemma.

I don't play demos, but I don't have any problems whatsoever with your screenshots... except one, which isn't a *bad* thing, but it's just something I'd never do personally. If I use ExGfx in a hack, I make sure NONE of the original SMW backgrounds are ever used. But if someone can use them anyway and get it to look nice, can I complain? Not really.

You should post a YouTube video of some of your best levels. THEN I can really give you a superb critique. If a picture is worth 1000 words, a motion picture at even 60 frames a second for just one minute is worth 3,600,000 words. Chew on that.

Hey, if you're looking for a custom sprite to use, I can send you my Cobrat.

Hehe, this is funny.

You should play on the fact that it's a "bad" hack and add all sorts of Engrish into it. And have World 2-2 be called "Burning" and be filled with horrible palettes that make your eyes bleed (but make that level have superb level design just to spite the player XD). And have one level be called "Missing No." and all the enemies have glitched graphics.

God, there's so many directions you could take a hack like this!

I've seen that Ayla's Quest before, and I can never get over how endlessly radical that is. When or if you finish that one, it'll probably be among my all-time favorite Rom hacks for any game, ever. Just the sheer amount of effort alone put into that hack is enough to make me choke on my own drool. (Ayla is awesome, too.)

Alright. No more games! Time for me to get SERIOUS.

THIS, my friends, is the true beauty of ASM. I believe I'm the first one to ever put this in a SMW hack... Tell me if I'm off on that.

I am going to make this hack one of the best SMW hacks in existance! Just you wait!

Eh, from what I've heard, I can't compete with MiOr... If it were anyone else, I'd be upset, but being bested by someone like him isn't so upsetting.

Seriously, though, that Ayla's Quest ROCKS. You better finish it is all I'm saying.

Meanwhile, here's another level I designed in the past hour or so. It's called "Retro Ramble", and you might see why.

<object width="425" height="355"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Gum2adsYVvM&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

This one still doesn't compare to Sand Hazard, but as far as nice, short, balanced, fun levels go, I think the mission was accomplished. In fact, I'm probably using this as the Title Screen Demo. We'll see. (This is an optional level that you have to beat in order to unlock the Green Switch Palace.)

I did the wind tokens myself from scratch, coding-wise, but the graphics are from SMAS. (They're the Coin Ship graphics from SMB3.) Yes, they do warp you to another level. Each time you collect one, the game increases the Red Berry counter by 1 (there are no berries in this hack), then checks to see if you have "eaten" 7 Red Berries. If you have, it sets Mario's action to the same thing as when he collects the Yoshi Wings powerup, and he flies into the sky and is warped to Level C8 (if on the main overworld) or 1C8 (if on a submap).

I also made a second powerup, called the Earth Juke. If you collect 6 of them, it activates the screen exit, taking you to a hidden part of the level.

Thanks for the compliments... I'm sure, though, that given time you'll probably surpass me. Just keep practicing.

Edit: Wow, I'm just crankin' 'em out today. :O

My best advice is to play some existing hacks (the good ones, not the noob hacks) and observe the level design and whatnot. If this is your first hack, don't worry about ExGfx or custom blocks or sprites-- you can get into that once you've become good at the basics, such as level design.

When making a level, try to make it something that could possibly appear in an actual Mario game, but don't be afraid to step out of the box either. Once you've found the balance, your levels will be excellent.

As for graphics, when you rip from other games, you should go for lots of variety, but only from a few titles. For example, in my hack I have graphics from the Mario series, the Sonic series and the Kirby series, and that's it. But I use lots of variety in my graphics anyway (i.e. ripping from all kinds of levels from those games). This rule isn't really a rule, it's just my opinion.

Lastly, people think that it's better to use only a few kinds of blocks and sprites per level. I think that's utter crap. Go crazy, I say, but you still have NO excuse to use glitched graphics for sprites.

Class dismissed.

(to Imajin) Yes, you can enter the castle. Inside is a P-switch that you can either hit right then to make a bunch of coins appear, or take outside to turn the coins in the Note Block area to platforms, allowing you to easily dodge the Mutant Turn Blocks.

(to Boing) Eh, I use them, but not really in the video.

I'll turn the stems green if you tell me what offset to change. I didn't see it in the Rom Map, but then again I didn't look.

I'd play the actual music, but HyperCam doesn't record sound. It did once, but it was so quiet it was pointless. Besides, I like picking out MP3s to add to my videos. ...The music for that level is the original SMB theme, if you want to know. I originally had custom music in my hack via AddMusic, but decided to switch to SMAS 'cause I liked the instruments better. SMB2 Main Theme sounds real nice on that desert level I showed earlier.

I actually like what I see, unlike some people... The fact that Dahrkie is going out of his way to make a revolutionary SMB3 editor alone is very benevolent of him. I can't complain, really.

Eesh! I wonder what you did wrong? SMB3 Workshop never blows MY levels up...

Well, it did once, but that only has to do with .M3L files. They don't mix with Hilly or Underground tilesets.

Eh, the repitition... Yeah, that's kind of an issue, but at least it's only throughout the first half of the level. Thanks for the offset.

P.S. Also, I don't mind your criticism at all; just because I like the hack a certain way gives me no excuse to design it poorly. But please tell me, for curiosity's sake: What do you have against hard levels?

Those are some of the best SMW custom level graphics I've ever seen in my entire life. I think I might include you in my Will for that.

Not too fond of the music, though. I dunno why... Instrument choices, maybe? *shrugs*

(to Boing) I've made up my mind: you're either an Aspie or a generally hotheaded person. And no, that wasn't a flame.

(to SNN) WOW, that's excellent music! Please, I beg you, do the other Cave Story levels! Grasstown and Eyes of Flame are my top two requests.

(to Dr. Mario) That tileset sample is fantastic. You seem like a pro at NES hacking. But is your level design good? If so, it compliments your graphical expertise, meaning I hold you in high regard.

(to Golden Yoshi) The screen is pretty nice, and the Black Yoshi is to die for, but the screen is missing something. Maybe put a hole in the background wall somewhere above that Shyguy-filled gap? Detail is win. (BTW, are you making ALL the Yoshis different colors? You totally should.)

(to everyone) Finally I have another level done. Well, it's a half level, rather. I used the existing Green Hill ExGfx in conjunction with other graphics from another Game Gear sonic game that I ripped by hand (which was easy to do this time, yay). I think I'm missing something here, and I think I know what it is too: HDMA fading in the background. I'm waiting until all the levels are finished to add HDMA, though, 'cause it's tough to add.

Well, here you go: World 2-1... Green Coast.

Bleh, the picture won't load...

Hey, no problem about the Yoshi colors... I totally understand, and it's not worth going on a wild tanget about.

Hmm... You sounded very defensive just then. Just to clarify, I think your hack is great, and was just trying to suggest something that I thought would improve it. It's what we do, right? If a hacker can't take criticism, he can't reach his full potential... Not saying you can't, of course, but you... did sound pretty defensive.

Maybe I'm tired. It's 7:00 in the morning and I haven't fallen asleep yet. I've been staying up all night working on an ASM bit for my hack... There's this block that you hit, and if you have 175 coins, it takes those coins from Mario and sets the On/Off switch to Off (which makes a bridge appear and makes Palette 7 a lighter shade), shakes the screen and plays a Boss Defeated fanfare. Wheeee!

Edit: Okay, I have another level to show you. It's the Ghost House in World 3. The graphics are ripped right from Wario Land II, and I think they turned out deliciously. This level has it ALL-- scrolling walls, Boo ceiling, AND crushing logs. I didn't show you guys the alternate exit though... (Don't worry, it activates the same path on the Overworld-- the difference is that you can skip the Log part and you get a free random mushroom; either regular, 1up or poison, thanks to a custom block).
