Let's see here...

My main PC is a scavenged Thinkpad currently dual-booting between OpenBSD 6.3 and Debian 9
My 'gaming' PC is running whatever the current version of Xubuntu is (I did a release upgrade this morning and immediately forgot what the ridiculous animal is for this one)
I have a NAS running FreeNAS 11
My capture rig is running Windows 7 because the capture hardware I bought a while back demands that it be so and I've been too cheap/lazy to change it
I have a Dell XPS M1710 running Windows XP to run old stuff I have laying around (it also has totally rad to the max color-changing LED lights all over it that I looked at once and then immediately disabled)

The rest of the junk I have laying around isn't in working order, so it's not running anything.

I managed to post in another forum instead of this one first, because I'm a good reader.

I registered for the forum because Xkeeper mentions it on twitter sometimes, and I frequently click the link, think it's interesting, then get distracted by something shiny and then forget about it again. This time, though, I decided to take the plunge because, I'm tired of doing the same thing all the time. I'm terrible at introductions, though, mostly because I have an aversion to talking about myself, but let's see if I can push through that and get something down here anyway...

If you're so inclined, you can find me all over the place as 'basscomm', except on Nintendo platforms, because their platform makes the clbuttic mistake of thinking that my nickname has profanity in it.

In the daytime I pretend to know what I'm doing with computers and technology for a television station in the midwest, and at night I pretend to know about video games and/or technology and write articles/post videos (links are in my profile, if anyone is interested). I've been playing video games in one form or another for as long as I can remember. I won't bore anyone with the nitty-gritty, but let's just say that I remember that time that the game industry crashed. I also ended up working at a (now defunct) game developer and got my name in a few games, but you shouldn't go out of your way to find them, because they're pretty awful.

I have a habit of registering for forums and then reading a whole bunch, but forgetting to log in and post. It's something that I'm still working on. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to getting the lay of the land around here and seeing what all of the hubbub is about.

I packed some dark chocolate-covered peanuts in with my lunch today, but they were gone before I left my neighborhood because I have good impulse control.

We have the remnants of Alberto blowing through, so it's already been a wet day, and it's going to get wetter.

Posted on 06-20-18 05:03:44 PM, in Worst movie(s) you've seen? Link
A few weeks ago I came across the YouTube channel of this guy named Herbert Midgely. His channel has about twenty million videos on it, which are kind of try-too-hard-to-be-funnys, but are mostly short, harmless, and inoffensive (see How to Eat a Banana After Getting a Haircut or How to Look at a Carton of Eggs, for example).

At the end of his videos he puts a bumper to watch his movie: Rise of the Robots, which is somehow available on Amazon Prime for free. I had a couple of hours a few weeks ago and I figured I would check it out. I like watching bad movies and amateur stuff sometimes, and can usually find something to like in them. Rise of the Robots, though, was one of the exceptions. It was bad, yeah, but it wasn't even the 'so bad it's good' kind of bad. It was just 'these people don't really know what they're doing and it shows' kind of bad. There were plot holes, bizarre pacing, audio levels were all over the place, and they hit the viewer over the head with the blunt end of the moral message hard enough to detach a retina.

I did manage to make it to the end and through the post credits sequences (there were a few of them), but in hindsight that was a really bad idea, and I don't recommend anyone do the same thing.

Other than the obvious choices I played a lot of Revenge of the Gator back in the Original Game Boy Days(tm). I picked it up again for the DS Virtual Console, and it's just as mediocre as I remember it, but I still enjoy it.

I spent way too many hours on Donkey Kong, mostly via the Super Game Boy and got what I considered to be respectably decent at it.

I also liked Quarth. I mean, I *assume* I would have liked it. I played it exactly once on a school field trip for, like 15 minutes, and enjoyed it. And then I've never seen it anywhere since. I've checked eBay occasionally to make sure that I didn't hallucinate and was actually playing Mr. Chin's Gourmet Paradise or something, but the game does really exist. I should pick up a copy sometime.

I was at my local 'used games/movies/music/books' place recently and picked up King's Knight, Defender of the Crown, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. After getting them home and playing them, I started to regret that decision.

I have way too many to count (it turns out I'm really lazy). But this post inspired me to dust off one of the things I've had for a really long time: this statue of Link getting ready to kill a... something.

I especially like how it's got a spot for your name, date, and high score, since The Legend of Zelda is known for having a robust and interesting high-score scene. And, since I was cleaning it off anyway, I took a few more pictures of it from other angles and posted them here.

I made this one a long time ago to demonstrate a bug in Super Mario Bros.

I actually got it to work on the first try, which is a minor miracle in itself since the timing is kind of hard to pull off.
