I never realized we had the same birthday (but 9 years apart), until today anyway
I've known a few others sharing my birthday before, but it's been a while ...Happy birthday to you too ![]() -------------------- |

![]() #61 Replacing a large info bar with a ribbon saves some space? How about this instead: ![]() Upgrade to Windows XP now and save even more screen space My setup at the exact same height shows 37 files, and more info for them ... (no toolbar, but I don't need one anyway)Windows 2000's file manager was even better, but XP's can at least be changed to look the same ... with Vista/7 (and probably 8), not so much, to the point I use an alternative instead ![]() The rest of the page doesn't seem that bad, although most of it is about the ribbon interface ![]() -------------------- |

I have a fox, it's on fire and getting older every 6 weeks
That's the first thing that came to mind, too (other than the animal, of course) ![]() -------------------- |

Weekdays: slowly get up, check IRC/jul/whatever for a little while, breakfast, then off to work (less than a hour after getting up
)Week-ends: similar, but minus work, late in the afternoon, and taking my time ![]() -------------------- |

Spoiler: Change "Fifteen" to "15" in the URL and it'll work, and it's also on the comic's page (with a different alt text), so it was probably intended ... Yep, that was interesting ![]() -------------------- |

1999-2000: Netscape 4, then 6 for a while
2001-2004: Internet Explorer 5 then 6 (sometimes Mozilla or early Firefox) 2005-now: Firefox 1.0 to I started with Netscape on a bugged Windows 95 that couldn't run Internet Explorer properly, then switched once I got a new computer, and eventually stayed with Firefox soon after 1.0 came out ... I also tried Opera and Chrome a bit, even kept Opera as a second browser, but neither of them made me switch from Firefox yet ![]() -------------------- |

I have 4 cores and
![]() But each core shares the full RAM, so you can't just divide it like that ... unless you're talking about running many instances of a program and using all CPU cores before running out of RAM ![]() -------------------- |

Even for single threaded stuff, cores are useful if you multitask a lot or run multiple programs at once ... or as a recent example for me, streaming an emulated PlayStation 2 game, which involved:
- PCSX2 - Screen capture over the game window (1280x896 30fps) - Resize/filter the screen capture (640x448) - Encode in H.264 and stream live (while watching it at the same time to make sure it looks fine) That kept my CPU (Core 2 Quad, 3.0GHz) at a constant 70-80% usage, I even had to set core affinity on a few processes to avoid lag (I've also done this with bsnes, at similar CPU usage)While it's true that's not exactly a typical desktop use, and 8 cores would also be slightly overkill for me, it's not only for multithreading ![]() -------------------- |

- Windows XP Professional SP3 on my home computer
- Windows XP Professional SP2 on my older computer (rarely used) - Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit at work (yes, all computers at work here run home editions )Also a few virtual machines I rarely use (MacOS 7.5.3 and 9.0.4, various Windows versions), but no phone or anything ![]() -------------------- |
