There's Xkeeper's method, add a hidden field on the Register page then make it IP ban when filled ("Homepage" here, with even a warning) ... it's been proven to work great, since those bots are really dumb enough to fill it

The ultra-wide screen looks interesting too ... it's like a dual wide 19" (same resolution), but without the separating edges in the middle


Then there's that 30" + 4x vertical 20" setup (going for over $4000) someone linked to on IRC earlier, I think its total resolution was 7360x1600 ... more than twice the width of my 27" + 19", which is already huge

And in case you're wondering what the garbage notes are, here's the 1UP sound data:

($A385, or $38385 in the ROM)

The underlined part is what's normally used (in reverse order, written directly to square 2's frequency register), the rest is the additional data for the glitched 1UP sound, which is the last few notes from the "power up" effect (also in reverse order, but originally note pitch values) ...

The $30 being written to $04E8 for the 1UP sound is a countdown timer, divided by 8 to get the data index, while the $6C is used as a starting index for a different table and is normally incremented to read a sequence of notes


Another fun thing to try is to write $FF to $04E2 (some other values work too), which starts the 1UP sound without initializing $04E8, so you get an even longer glitched version of it

I have it at work and it's still not that bad after some tweaking, but I'm still not switching from XP here ... even with a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate on a DVD-R (which I only got to mess around with in VMWare)

Vista's theme actually does look better than XP's default "Fisher-Price" (not so much without Aero), but it doesn't really take much for that

I've stayed with Classic here too, using the same custom color scheme for nearly 6 years now ... the only way I'd ever be satisfied with a theme anyway would be to make it myself, since the small simple ones aren't exactly common

Not to mention all the stuff that requires SP2, like Visual Studio 2005 when I tried it ...

2000 and XP were only 1-2 years apart too, so it's more like they rushed to make a newbie-friendly version of Windows NT to forget ME's failure

This is most of the changes I can think of between 2000 and XP (before SP1/SP2):
- Fisher-Price look (and unless you hack uxtheme.dll, it's all you get, although Media Center later improved it a bit)
- ClearType antialiasing (which is actually a good thing, sure beats Windows 98's)
- Support for 32bit icons with transparency, and new Windows icons (but I liked Windows 2000's better ...)
- User login screen, fast switching (makes it somewhat easier if you do have multiple user accounts, useless otherwise and can be disabled)
- The taskbar shows the full date and day of week if big enough
- New Start menu (with which I always got lost, and it removes My Computer from the desktop, so screw that)
- The Start menu settings dialog has new sample pictures (as a side effect, explorer.exe is about 4x bigger, really nice)
- Searching now greets you with a dog that wastes your time with several useless steps (but delete C:\windows\srchasst and you're back to Windows 2000's nice and simple Search)
- Regedit doubled in size
- More default drivers than ever, 95% of which end up being useless
- More bloat and services enabled by default (that's always a new feature)

Give me ClearType and XP SP2's application/driver support in Windows 2000 and I'd switch back to that anytime as well

I've had Windows 95 mess up twice like that at the time

- I had a RAMdisk for a while, first set to 20MB (out of 32MB RAM), then lowered it to 3MB to free up some more RAM for Windows/programs/etc. ... then one day I decided to set it to 20MB again (forgot why) and the computer suddenly froze I rebooted only to see it fail to find win.com, then realized the whole Windows folder was corrupted ... I reinstalled Windows on the second partition, copied Windows's files over, ran chkdsk to get most of the files back (desktop, etc.), and all was fine ... or almost, I lost the old wallpaper I drew in Paint the day I got that computer

- About a year later, I forgot how that one happened but Windows glitched up again after a crash, it still ran but a lot of things were broken (corrupted registry?), like I couldn't run Internet Explorer (and some other programs) or even drag&drop ... eventually I installed Windows on the second partition again and it ran fine, except I never got Internet access on it (I had dialup), so I ended up with a dual Windows 95 boot ... broken with Internet access, and non broken without (this stayed for almost a year until I got Windows 98)

At least I've never had problems like this again, I'm even nearing 3 months of uptime now

Each screen is 256x192, for a total of 256x384 ... NES and SNES were 256x224 (256x240 on PAL), the Master System was exactly 256x192 itself, so even a single DS screen wouldn't look bad on TV

Fullscreen GameBoy Advance (240x160) on my 27" does have pretty large pixels, though, or would without video filters

Usually around 500-600MB for me (got 2GB RAM), but I always leave many things running even when I'm gone (WinAMP, mIRC, Klient, Firefox, EditPlus, etc.), so 1GB is probably a minimum for me now, even on XP

But I've never filled the whole 2GB RAM yet, even with this

My pagefile is only 256MB, since I set it to never go higher ... it works perfectly, but Windows liked to complain (and resize it) when I had it smaller before (but the minimum for it is 2MB)


To change it:
System Properties -> Advanced -> Performance (Settings) -> Advanced -> Virtual Memory (Modify) -> select partition and size -> Set

Freeing gigabytes of disk space from useless oversized virtual memory is really advanced stuff

Seems exactly like Gauntlet (and it's all I can think of too), except the only one listed for PC on GameFAQs was from 1998 ... (Geneforge was from 2001, so it can't be that either)

But there's one for Genesis that fits into the time period

The table summary attribute should be used to describe
the table structure. It is very helpful for people using
non-visual browsers. The scope and headers attributes for
table cells are useful for specifying which headers apply
to each table cell, enabling non-visual browsers to provide
