Originally posted by SC Mostly Knytt Stories. But I already detailed that on the 'oddly interesting games' thread. :3c
Honorable mentions go to Tower Unite, Firewatch, Habbo Hotel, DOOM II, Minecraft, Roblox, and Manyland.
Okay. It's been a couple years since my last post in this thread, so let me clarify a few things on this old list I posted, and also add some new ones to the pile that I've played since then:
- Tower Unite: yeaaaaah I don't play this game anymore lmao. mostly because a) the community is kinda trash, b) it runs like shit on my PC, and c) apparently macdguy (lead dev) isn't the greatest person (i don't remember the specifics on this front). but yeah, no longer that relevant to me.
- DOOM II: tbh i only really like doom ii when paired with a modern source port and a gameplay mod or two. as of late, i find the Super Wacky Weapons Mod to be pretty dang good. even then though i tend to get burnt out on doom...
- Minecraft: it's only fairly recently hit me but Minecraft is one of those games where I like seeing media about it and I like seeing people play it but for the life of me I always get burnt out on this game so fast. part of it is because while vanilla is a nice rounded experience, it can get kinda boring if you aren't good at building or making farms or what not. and i am not good at either of those things (: -- mods like Quark and other vanilla tweaks mods do help, but even then I kinda wish minecraft had support for household items like fridges, chairs, and whatnot. instead of having to turn the regular blocks into those. kind of a weird thing to wish for, but blargh. i am so glad minecraft is popular, though. it deserves to be, even though Notch can fuck off
- Habbo Hotel: gotta be honest folks, only like this game for the graphics (and i never play on the main instance anymore because fuck paying for furni)
- Roblox: it is just harder and harder to find decent games on the platform nowadays. i am actually tempted to make a list of good roblox places (for anyone above the age of 13) and stash it somewhere on my website. (novetus is kinda neat tho)
- Manyland: haven't played this in a while and i kinda wish it was open-source, but it's still cool.
- Firewatch: ...actually this game still whips (well, except for the ending, but i'll let it slide).
and now, a few additions to the list:
- Soul Void: an extremely good game boy walking simulator about fighting your inner demons of doubt, anxiety, and helplessness. a very touching game with well-drawn art and good characters. my only major beef is that it has no music, but other than that it is very much worth playing.
- Escaped Chasm and Dweller's Empty Path: oOOOH man okay okay okay. i'm not gonna spoil much but these are both games by temmie chang, who you might know as someone who has worked on undertale and deltarune. these are both rpg maker walking simulators, one longer than the other, and despite looking totally different they do take place in the same universe. if you can, play escaped chasm first. you don't have to, but it will make the experience of DEP that much nicer. i'm not gonna spoil the story for either but it's pretty damn interesting, i'll say that much.
