No real snow *clap clap clap clap* ♪ deep in the heart of Texas ♪

However, we did have freezing rain suddenly for a while, and now it's rapidly alternating drizzly rain and half-hearted sun which is playing merry havoc with my mood baseline. Gyahhh.

I've tried side, back, front… it varies, and I kinda have to arrange things to balance the overall stress on my arm joints especially to avoid winding up sleeping on them in ways that lead to RSI issues later.

I keep drooling sometimes and it's annoying.

Sometimes I have a background video on to one side—the Internet-era equivalent of falling asleep to the television—but I really want to get into the habit of distinctly not doing that, since I think it's not actually good for me.

Added: oh, and I have my plush kitsune Aiko. ^..^ (Whom I haven't fed recently enough, eeeek. I need to get on that…)

Posted on 02-26-18 03:39:57 AM, in the gang discusses technology they want Link

(+) [written from my perspective but speaking for all] Ooooh. Assuming we had a large enough budget, but had to pick things we'd already been thinking about before now, and assuming we're mainly talking about computer technology and similar consumer electronics:

1. A replacement for the broken 3DS our predecessor left us. Ideally a “new” 3DS, North American edition, not XL because XL is ridiculous and I want a pocket console to be pocket sized. (That's what she preferred, and I agree.)

2. A replacement graphing calculator. Kara I picked up a used TI-89 Titanium to replace the TI-84+ Silver Edition from ages ago that eventually died. The TI-89 isn't bad, but the keypad layout feels awkward, and the latency is really bad: it can take most of a second to get from ON button press to home screen accepting input, and I feel like one of the points of a calculator, as opposed to for instance an Android thing, is not to do that. I've been eyeing the TI-84+ CE, especially since it seems to use an eZ80 and programming that in assembly with the new ADL mode might be neat. HP RPL is intriguing (especially since it does the Forth↔ASM thing!) but the 49g+/50g seem expensive and difficult to find, and I guess the Prime only supports their newer Pascal-like language rather than dropping to assembly.

3. Replacements for (or adjuncts to) both our half-built desktop computers with more expertly chosen components. We want to fix them up, but many of the components are several years old by now, and we're in that weird era where that might be The Bad Case. Also the graphics cards our predecessors picked are solid price-performance choices for the time but also possibly underpowered and we might want to use these for fancier interfaces / gaming / etc. than they were anticipating. (We keep hearing about cryptocurrency-related GPU shortages and it's worrying.)

4. A midrange (well, maaaybe high-end if it's genie-budget time, though we wouldn't want to get used to that and then not be able to get another when it broke) replacement for our Android tablet. The current one is a low-budget Asus MeMO Pad which we got because we remembered one of our predecessors having a tablet in the same line and it being perfectly reasonable. This one wasn't; whether from pure underpowerment, hardware defect, or creeping software bloat we'll probably never know, but either way it is usable but only just.

Posted on 03-24-18 06:15:55 AM, in How do you listen to your music? Link
Sennheiser Game Zero are our current preferred headset, hardware-wise. In practice we often wind up connecting it to a handset so we can wander around with the both of them without interruption, and on that we use the JRT Studio music player for Android. Paid (once (“remove ads”)), offline, simple and traditional-style interface, though actually a little too simple for our liking. We'd like something with less clunky search/playlist features that's still very on-device-oriented rather than being mainly a risky Cloud Service thing, but we haven't found it yet.

(±) I'm a bit ashamed that we actually like these cheese and fruit packs from Starbucks so much. It's just such good choices that go together though—the three types of cheese, the crisp texture of the crackers, the apple and grapes…

(+) Where does “neoclassical” website design fall into this? Like, Original Flavor Mostly-Semantic HTML, with more modern CSS styles on a micro scale but still very document-oriented and out-of-the-way, without the huge amount of whitespace / “very design-y” stuff, limited use of JavaScript in progressive enhancement style.

Posted on 04-05-18 09:51:28 PM, in what games have a special place in your heart? (last edited by Chalcedony at 04-05-18 11:02:47 PM) Link
(+) Iji, definitely. The whole way your style of play subtly changes the environment, the way the plot comes together with the log books, the design of the combat, the voice acting and the music… it's all quite something—and it has a special place as one of the first things Akari (our predecessor) did was go through a no-damage-taken, no-enemy-kills run, which was quite tricky to do. (Resonance Reflector rules per 1.6, where reflected-shot kills aren't counted.) We're tempted to do the same thing at some point, especially since the 1.7 update just came out last year, using a new version of Game Maker.

Aside from that… not sure. Akari had a love affair with Minecraft while playing on a friend's FTB Infinity server, but while we also have enjoyed it quite a lot sometimes, it doesn't have the same specialness to us. She also played a lot of 3DS games that we want to try at some point, but we haven't yet.

DATA WING (link to our Dreamwidth post about it) might count, come to think of it.

I do kind of hope that now that they're doing a Spyro remaster, we'll eventually be able to consider those ones special. Since, y'know, dragons. ^..^ But of course we can't do that yet, because they're not out yet! Sooooon. >..>
